🔴Dragon’s Blood: When Heritage is Uprooted Socotra: The Cry of Wounded Sovereignty on World Heritage
Day By: Dr. Altaf
Hamdi On April 18th, the world raises the banners of "preservation" and "protection" in celebration of
#WorldHeritageDay. Yet, as nations busily glorify their legacies, the Yemeni island of
#Socotra—the jewel of the Indian Ocean and a global heritage icon—stands as a witness to one of the most heinous forms of "civilizational dispossession" in the modern era.
This is the story of the
#Dragon_Blood_Tree ($Dracaena$
$cinnabari$); a legend rooted deep in history, which no longer merely faces the harshness of climate change, but has fallen victim to an organized "biopiracy" that transcends borders and laws.
🔴 Beyond the Biological Invasion Since 2017, the Socotra archipelago has groaned under the weight of practices that extended beyond geopolitical control to tamper with the "cultural DNA" of the land. The clandestine and illegal transfer of ancient Dragon’s Blood trees to the United Arab Emirates—facilitated by the militias of the so-called "Transitional Council"—cannot be legally characterized as anything less than a full-scale "cultural looting." These militias, once a political partner in governance without decision-making authority, turned against the legitimate Yemeni government by force of arms in 2025, becoming today mere armed formations operating outside the state's authority.
This violation is not merely an "environmental crime"; it is a direct assault on the "Right to Memory." A tree that took centuries to grow in Socotra’s soil is displayed today in foreign nurseries and squares as visual spoils of war—a desperate attempt to domesticate a heritage that cannot be replicated, and to monopolize a symbolism that is neither for sale nor purchase.
🔴 Wasted Sovereignty Under
#UNESCO’s Microscope @UNESCOThis conduct places the international community before a historic responsibility, as this "organized looting" represents a flagrant breach of several international conventions: The World Heritage Convention (1972): Given Socotra's status as a registered site, any alteration of its natural characteristics or the transfer of its biological components without the consent of national sovereignty (the legitimate Yemeni government) is a violation of the spirit of the convention, which mandates states to protect heritage, not plunder it.
The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966): Article (1) and General Comment No. (21) affirm that peoples have an absolute right to dispose of their natural resources. The uprooting of the Dragon’s Blood tree deprives the Yemeni people of a livelihood tied to ecotourism and assaults their cultural identity. Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003): Article (15) stipulates the necessity of involving local communities in safeguarding their heritage. What happened in Socotra is a "confiscation of the will of the
#Socotri community," which views this tree as a sacred being and an existential part of its identity.
🔴 Moral Cultural Genocide The actions practiced by Emirati forces during their presence in the archipelago constitute a form of "moral cultural genocide"; the land was emptied of its symbolic content to weaken the emotional bond between the people and their soil. Although the legitimate Yemeni government issued a decree for these forces to depart by the end of 2025, the "Right to Restitution" does not expire. Every transferred tree is a material "indictment" visible in the streets and cities of the transgressing state, necessitating the activation of international legal channels to recover these natural assets.
🔴 The Call of the Land on Heritage Day On this global day, we do not ask the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for mere statements of concern; we demand that the Socotra Archipelago be immediately placed under the list of "World Heritage in Danger." Protecting the Dragon’s Blood tree is the protection of one of the world's last bastions of biological uniqueness. Socotra is not merely geography; it is the "cultural lung of
#YEMEN." Uprooting its trees is an uprooting of the dignity of the Yemeni people and a theft of their right to protect their ancestors' legacy. Let the world know that while stolen trees may change their location, they will never grant "cultural legitimacy" to those who stole them. Identity is not planted in a pot; it sprouts from the womb of the earth that has blessed it since the dawn of history.
