Iâm in Frankfurt today with the Payara team, talking about whatâs next for Java: modernization, cloud deployment, and how we build things sustainably and smartly. Great to see people here from BMW, DPD, Bundesagentur fĂŒr Arbeit, and PayPalâit shows how relevant these topics are across industries.
Modernization isnât optional anymore. Nearly half of all Java apps today need it (47%), and almost 90% of leaders say itâs a higher priority than other projects. The catch: doing this well will tie up ~45% of developer time for more than 5 years.
Thatâs why Iâm excited about Payara Qube. It makes deploying Java apps into the cloud almost friction-freeâwhether youâre using Jakarta EE, Quarkus, Micronaut, or Spring Boot. Same workflow, same tooling, across AWS / Azure / GCP. And features like Scale to Zero mean you donât spin up resources when theyâre not neededâlower cost, less waste, more efficiency.
At XDEV Software, we actually built something very similar more than 12 years ago: XDEV Cloud. Back then, the idea of running business-critical apps in the cloud was simply too early, and adoption wasnât there yet. That experience makes me even more convinced today: solutions like Qube are exactly what many teams need now to modernize successfully.
But technical tools alone wonât get us there. At XDEV, we also pair teams with Buddiesâexperienced hands who do alongside you. They help unblock, advise, share patterns, and transfer knowledge. Thatâs the piece I believe differentiates success: empowerment, not just delivery.
If youâre working on modernizing a Java stackâor need to figure out where to startâIâd love to talk.
