ALT You're looking at the largest ever magnetic map of the Universe!
Magnetic fields influence how galaxies grow, how matter moves through space, and how the Universe has evolved over billions of years.
• With this new map, scientists can now study how magnetic fields influence interactions between galaxies, including our own Milky Way and its neighbours, the Magellanic Clouds.
The map was produced by an international team led by researchers at CSIRO and the SKAO, including our very own Dr Alec Thomson and Prof. Naomi McClure-Griffiths, using CSIRO's ASKAP radio telescope, an SKA precursor located on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Western Australia.
* The future is bright for this type of research - the
SKA telescopes will reveal the cosmic web in even greater detail and help to uncover the origin of magnetic fields in the Universe!

🚀 CRACKING THE CODE OF PHYSICS: Thrust vs. Pressure! 🚀
Ever wondered why a massive commercial airplane can cruise effortlessly through the sky, but a pair of sharp stiletto heels will instantly sink into soft mud? ✈️👠 It all comes down to two fundamental concepts in science: Thrust and Pressure.
Let’s break them down so you can ace your next exam or just impress your friends with some cool physics trivia! 🧠👇
🔹 What is Thrust?
Thrust is the total perpendicular force acting on a surface. Think of it as a massive, directional "push" that moves an object forward.
The Science: It is a vector quantity (meaning direction matters!). When an engine expels gas backward, the reaction force pushes the vehicle forward.
Real-World Examples: * 🚀 Rockets blasting off into space.
✈️ Jet engines sucking in air and forcing it out the back to propel a plane.
🦅 Birds flapping their wings to push against the air.
🔸 What is Pressure?
Pressure is the effect of that thrust distributed over a specific area. It’s not just about how hard you push, but where and how widely that force is spread out!
The mathematical formula is simple:
The Science: Pressure is a scalar quantity. If you keep the force the same but decrease the area, the pressure sky-rockets! 📈
Real-World Examples:
🎿 Snowshoes vs. Boots: Snowshoes have a wide surface area, spreading your weight so you don't sink into the snow.
🔪 Sharp Knives: A sharp knife has a tiny edge area, creating immense pressure to cut through food effortlessly.
🌊 High Pressure in Deep Waters
Did you know that fluid pressure increases with depth? Deep-sea scuba divers and submarines have to be built to withstand immense pressure from the weight of the water above them. The same principles are used in hydraulic lifts to hoist heavy cars with minimal effort! 🚗💨

Want to become a DIY Magneto? 🔨
If you forge steel while it’s pointed toward Earth's magnetic pole, you’re basically "hammering" the atoms into alignment!
Just don't get too heated—literally—or you’ll lose your pull. 😂 🧭

We have alfalfa! 🌱✨
check out the latest experiment on-board the @iss. Our @Astro_Jessica is currently investigating the tiny but mighty world of plant-microbe interactions. Specifically they are studying nitrogen fixation, which is the natural process that helps plants get the nutrients they need to grow strong.
as we look toward the @NASAArtemis program and future missions to the Moon and Mars, these experiments are the first steps to becoming sustainable space gardeners!! 👀🌱

Mother Nature shares this with many animals too! 🩸💐
While most mammals reabsorb their uterine lining, these species actually menstruate:
Humans
Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Gorillas, Orangutans & Gibbons
Baboons & many other monkeys
Certain Bats
Elephant shrews (sengis)
Cairo spiny mouse (the only known rodent!)
A rare evolutionary trait found in less than 2% of mammals.
It's natural. It's biological. And you're not alone. 🌍

The Star on the Edge of Chaos.
Meet AG Carinae, one of the brightest and most massive stars in our galaxy. Captured here by the Hubble Space Telescope, this cosmic giant is locked in a spectacular tug-of-war between gravity and radiation.
It’s roughly 70 times more massive than our Sun and shines with the brilliance of 1 million Suns.
That glowing halo of dust and gas spans about 5 light-years wide—that’s more than the distance from our Sun to the nearest star!
Stars like this are rare because they burn fast and die young. It’s constantly shedding its outer layers in massive eruptions to keep itself from literally blowing apart.
AG Carinae reminds us that even in the cold vacuum of space, there is a fierce, beautiful fire burning.
