THE FORGOTTEN FLYING RADAR PICKET In the late 1950s, deep inside the Navy’s classified Cold War radar programs, Sikorsky transformed the massive CH-37 Mojave into one of the strangest helicopters ever built: the HR2S-1W airborne early warning helicopter. Its mission was simple in theory but critical in practice, detect incoming Soviet bombers and cruise missiles long before they reached the fleet. To do it, engineers fitted the helicopter with a huge fiberglass radar nose packed with early warning electronics and operator stations inside the cabin. The result looked less like a helicopter and more like a flying radar station. At the height of Cold War tensions, projects like this were developed quietly behind closed doors as the U.S. military searched for any advantage against the growing Soviet long-range bomber threat. The HR2S-1W became part of that secretive push into airborne radar and fleet defense technology. But there was a problem. The Mojave was already maintenance-heavy and underpowered. Once loaded with radar equipment, consoles, and operators, performance suffered badly. The concept never matured into an operational system, and the Navy ultimately shifted toward fixed-wing airborne early warning aircraft like the WF-2/E-1 Tracer and eventually the legendary E-2 Hawkeye. Only a handful of HR2S-1Ws were ever built and tested, making photographs of them exceptionally rare today. A forgotten Cold War experiment born from classified development, early radar warfare, and the fear of a surprise attack from the sky. When one of their own is targeted, a secret fraternity of scientists tied to top-secret defense projects takes notice. They're understandably nervous about current events. The disappearance of a key figure in metallurgy adds to their unease. #SecretProjects #NationalSecurity

The Foxbat was a not infrequent target in artwork for American aerospace projects; (artwork for McDonnell Vectored Lift Fighter, smaller configuration with two J85s, harvested from secretprojects forum)
Intruder (proposed A-6F) splashing a Foxbat would have been incredible.

I did a bit of cursory searching on secretprojects to try and verify this and found a darkly hilarious post from 2009;

Found on the secretprojects forums, some old Nimrod MRA4 promotional artwork. Cancelled due to various issues, the most common one on the internet being some variation of the wings and fuselages not fitting together right. There's a couple variants I've seen, from the old 60s vintage fuselages differing from each other while the new wings were build to a common standard, the new wings not being built to a common standard (unlike in the age of CAD imo), or ye olde tolerance stacking. It seems to have been less of a complete hash than the AEW3, at least.

Couple more pics harvested from the secretprojects forum. One with four tail mounted engines probably contributed a bit of DNA to the JetStar.

Imagine managing a $2 billion budget at Wright-Patterson AFB, with security clearances beyond presidential level. He was privy to classified testing, even seeing advanced craft, though not allowed to examine them up close. #SecretProjects #AirForce #Unexplained

via secretprojects forum, late 1940s Convair concept for a seaplane night fighter. Two crew, four 20mm cannons for armament. This would have been contemporary with the early phases of the F2Y (Sea Dart) development program.
