Why Payload Size Matters in System Design
We talk a lot about system security and speed, but message size is just as important—and often overlooked.
This week, I had a discussion with an engineer about why he needed to redesign a system he built. Here’s what happened:
- He implemented complex backend computations and needed to send the results to web and mobile clients via WebSockets every 30 seconds.
- The data? An array of at least 100 objects.
I asked a crucial question:
"Will all the data change every 30 seconds?"
His response? "No."
My advice?
Optimize with incremental updates. Instead of sending the entire dataset every time:
- Use a RESTful API for the initial full snapshot.
- Use WebSockets to send only the objects that changed.
The Mistake Many Developers Make:
Too often, developers send too much data to the frontend. Instead of selecting only what’s needed, they fetch entire objects, leaving the frontend to filter. This is inefficient.
This is one of the problems GraphQL solves—it lets you request only the data you need. But GraphQL alone won’t optimize real-time updates. You still need WebSockets, subscriptions, or other optimizations to reduce payload size.
How to Optimize Payload Size:
- Understand the frontend needs – Return only what’s necessary.
- Send only changes – No need to resend unchanged data.
- Enable compression – Use Gzip, Brotli, or MessagePack to reduce payload size.
- Use delta encoding – If only { price: 510 } changes, don’t resend { price: 500, volume: 1000 }.
- Leverage client-side caching – Send only updates relative to cached data.
- Batch WebSocket messages – Instead of 100 small updates, group them into one.
- Choose the right real-time tech:
SSE (Server-Sent Events) – Best for one-way updates.
- WebSockets – Best for bi-directional communication (e.g., trading apps, chat).
The Real Impact of Large Payloads
Now, let’s do the math:
- A single object in the dataset is about 100 bytes (UTF-8 encoded).
- With 100 objects, that’s 10KB per update—excluding headers and metadata.
- Multiply that by 1,000 users receiving updates every 30 seconds. The server will struggle!
This directly affects:
- Speed – Larger payloads slow down the system.
- Battery Life – More data processing drains power.
- CPU Usage – The frontend wastes resources parsing unnecessary data.
- Bandwidth Costs – Higher data usage means increased server expenses.
Final Thoughts:
- Message size is critical. It affects performance, scalability, and user experience just as much as security and speed.
- Plan your data flow properly, optimize transmissions, and build smarter systems.
What other strategies do you use to optimize payload size? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇
