Did you know? In Uganda, many pregnant #Deaf women and girls cannot access proper antenatal care simply because there are no #Ugandan sign language interpreters or information in Ugandan Sign Language (USL) in various health facilities across the country.
They miss important health advice, cannot give informed consent, and often leave clinics confused which is not just a "communication problem" but it's a life-threatening barrier and injustices Deaf women face while accessing essential healthcare services.

📢 This is NOT just my family’s problem.
This is a deep-rooted issue within the Japanese education system.
In Japan, students with disabilities are often said to be “included.”
But the truth is — inclusion ends right after enrollment.
Once admitted, children with disabilities are left behind.
No sign language. No captions. No real supports.
And when they are bullied, the schools and boards of education cover it up.
They hide the truth.
They destroy evidence.
They blame the victim.
And worst of all, they pressure parents into silence.
This is happening today in schools across Japan.
Even now.
Even as you read this.
Japan still lacks true inclusive education.
Japan still lacks real accountability.
And parents who fight for their children…
are treated as “troublemakers.”
I am sharing this not out of hate,
but out of love for my children,
and a desperate wish to change a country
that continues to ignore its most vulnerable.
We need your eyes.
We need your voices.
Let this message be seen by the world.
Let Japan be held to a global standard of human rights.

Today, 🇺🇳 @OHCHR_Cambodia joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of Sign Languages, a powerful reminder of the need to protect and promote linguistic identity and cultural diversity and human dignity for all deaf, hard-of-hearing persons and other sign language users.
👐 This year’s theme, “𝐍𝐨 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬,” reinforces that sign language is not merely a means of communication. It is a vital expression of culture, identity and human dignity.
In 🇰🇭 #Cambodia, 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 is widely used by the deaf community, yet it remains formally unrecognized. Recognition is essential to ensure meaningful participation, equality, and the protection of rights for all deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. ✅ Formal recognition would help Cambodia fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
🤝 On this occasion, United Nations Human Rights in Cambodia calls for:
• 📝 Formal recognition of Cambodian Sign Language
• 📜 Inclusive policies that uphold the rights of deaf persons in line with the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
• 🤝 Strong partnerships between government, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and service providers
Together, we can advance sign language rights, raise awareness and build a society where everyone is seen, heard and respected.

Meet Bethelhem “Betty” Shitahun Mihret 🇪🇹
A Deaf disability rights advocate and educator, Betty is co-founder of the Hope for the Deaf Association and works with UNICEF Ethiopia to advance inclusive education. She also serves on the Malala Fund’s Young Women Education Advisory Council and is a 2025/26 Chevening Scholar in the UK.
Her work reflects the power of advocacy, education, and resilience in driving change for girls and young women with disabilities.
