Today, 🇺🇳
@OHCHR_Cambodia joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of Sign Languages, a powerful reminder of the need to protect and promote linguistic identity and cultural diversity and human dignity for all deaf, hard-of-hearing persons and other sign language users.
👐 This year’s theme, “𝐍𝐨 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬,” reinforces that sign language is not merely a means of communication. It is a vital expression of culture, identity and human dignity.
In 🇰🇭
#Cambodia, 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 is widely used by the deaf community, yet it remains formally unrecognized. Recognition is essential to ensure meaningful participation, equality, and the protection of rights for all deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. ✅ Formal recognition would help Cambodia fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
🤝 On this occasion, United Nations Human Rights in Cambodia calls for:
• 📝 Formal recognition of Cambodian Sign Language
• 📜 Inclusive policies that uphold the rights of deaf persons in line with the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
• 🤝 Strong partnerships between government, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and service providers
Together, we can advance sign language rights, raise awareness and build a society where everyone is seen, heard and respected.
