Ethiopia’s tragedy: truth-tellers are in prison, while those who manipulate the truth hold power.
Eight years ago today, I walked out of Kaliti prison after years of incarceration — including more than a year in solitary confinement in an extrajudicial facility. My release did not come from the goodwill of the Ethiopian government. It came from the pressure of family, friends, Ethiopians at home and abroad, and from the diplomatic efforts of the British government, along with the engagement of many civic organisations in the UK.
On the day of my release, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was the first to meet me. He told me a dramatic story — that he had issued an ultimatum to his colleagues, threatening to resign unless I was freed. In the years since, I have spoken to people who were inside that system at the time. They confirmed that no such ultimatum was ever issued. It was a fabrication — the first of many lies he told me in the days, weeks, and months that followed.
The real heroes of my release were ordinary Ethiopians who took risks, organised, and refused to let my name be forgotten. Among them, one stands above all: Meskerem Abera — a mother of two boys, one of whom was a toddler at the time. She travelled from Hawassa to Addis Ababa and stood on public stages demanding my freedom.
Today, Meskerem is imprisoned in the same Kaliti prison where I once was, leaving behind an infant who was not even one year old. Her jailor is the same Prime Minister who once claimed he would resign if I were not released.
This is Ethiopia’s tragedy: truth tellers are in prison, while those who manipulate truth hold power.
The photos tell the story: – One shows a handshake with Abiy Ahmed that went viral — taken moments after he told me the fabricated story about my release. – The other shows Meskerem Abera campaigning for me in Addis Ababa at the Semayawi Party's conference hall, long before anyone knew the personal cost she would pay for standing with the persecuted.
What pains me today is not only her imprisonment, but the silence around it. There is no sustained, organised social media campaign for Meskerem Aberra or for the many prisoners of conscience in Ethiopia.
I often feel helpless that I cannot do more. But I am not hopeless. The Amhara resistance movement, Fano, has shown that the Ethiopian people have not surrendered their dignity or their will to resist oppression. I believe that the day is coming when those who are unjustly imprisoned — including Meskerem — will walk free.
Their freedom will not be a gift. It will be the result of a people who refuse to bow to lies, intimidation, or tyranny.
