The Norway spruce has a genome seven times larger than the human genome. When scientists sequenced it in 2013, it was the largest genome ever mapped: 20 billion base pairs. Humans have about 3 billion. A tiny mustard plant called Arabidopsis has about 135 million and has been a genetics model organism for decades. The strange part: despite its enormous genome, the Norway spruce has approximately the same number of functional genes as Arabidopsis. About 28,000. The rest of the genome, more than 70 percent of it, is composed of transposable elements: repetitive sequences that jump around the genome and accumulate over time, essentially genomic junk that the spruce has never evolved an efficient mechanism to remove. The Norway spruce's genome is not complicated because the tree is complicated. It's complicated because the tree is old. Conifers have been around for hundreds of millions of years without the genomic housekeeping mechanisms that many other plants evolved. The genome is a record of everything the tree never threw away. #forests #treefacts #nature #science

🌳 Did You Know? Trees are nature's air purifiers! Carbon Sequestration: Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, storing carbon in their biomass and releasing oxygen. A single mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year! 🌍 - Pollution Fighters: Beyond CO2, trees also capture other pollutants like nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. They act like giant filters, improving air quality in urban environments where pollution is often at its worst. 🏙️ - Health Benefits: By reducing pollution, trees indirectly lower respiratory problems, leading to healthier communities. Studies show that living near green spaces can even increase life expectancy! 🌲❤️ #TreeFacts #EcoFriendly #NatureLovers #AirQuality #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GreenLiving #UrbanForests #PollutionReduction

🌳✨ The Scoop on How Trees Are the Unsung Heroes of Air Purification! ✨🌳 Here's the lowdown on how our silent green friends, the trees, are battling pollution: - Leafy Vacuums: Every leaf works like a mini air purifier. They suck in carbon dioxide and, through photosynthesis, spit out fresh oxygen. "Thanks for the breath of fresh air, Mr. Oak!" - Particle Party: Trees love to trap tiny pollution particles on their leaves. Think of it as trees giving pollution a big, leafy hug. Some trees even have hairy leaves for extra trapping flair – who knew leaves could be so stylish? - Bark with Benefits: Not just the leaves, but tree bark gets in on the action too. There's lots of new scientific studies about how certain barks might even munch on methane, a notorious greenhouse gas. - Rooting for Clean Air: Underneath, trees stash carbon in their roots and soil, keeping it out of our atmosphere where it can't cause trouble. So, the next time you're enjoying a stroll in the park, give a nod to the trees. They're not just there for the aesthetics; they're working overtime to clean our air, one leaf at a time. Plant More Trees! It's like setting up your own crowd-sourced air purification system. And while trees are doing their part, cutting down our own emissions would be like giving them a well-deserved break. #TreeFacts #ClimateAction #EnvironmentFriendly #GreenLungs #PlantForThePlanet

■ 🌸【Silk Tree After Bloom】 In Tokyo, the peak blooming of the Albizia julibrissin (commonly known as the silk tree or nemunoki) ended in early July. This video shows the flowers about two weeks past their prime. ■ A deciduous tall tree in the legume family, the nemunoki blooms in early summer with deep pink, brush-like flowers—those “bristles” are actually long stamens. ■ A unique feature is its “sleep movement”—its leaves close at night, inspiring the Japanese name nemunoki (meaning “sleeping tree”). ■ The kanji name 合歓 (“shared joy”) comes from ancient imagery of lovers leaning together as the leaves close. ■ It appears in three poems in the Manyōshū, showing its long-standing cultural appeal. ■ Native to temperate and subtropical Asia, including Japan. ■ The seeds are moderately toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, but not harmful to humans. #Nemunoki #SilkTree #AlbiziaJulibrissin #SleepMovement #TreeFacts
