This applies here in #bced too! Great, concise explanation from @ONlit_social #literacy #universalscreening #MTSS
Your screening questions answered! Why screen – don’t we already know which students need help? Early reading screening can uncover needs and strengths that might not be obvious in everyday classroom observations; it plays an important role in meeting students' right to read.

Every child has the right to be taught to read within our public school system. It shouldn’t be something reserved for those who can advocate effectively, afford tutoring and access private assessments, as my family has been fortunate to do. 🇨🇦 #RightToRead #UniversalScreening

This is a must-watch for educators, especially here in #bced, in light of our provincial government’s recent $30 million investment in evidence-based literacy assessment and training for teachers. So many critical, relevant takeaways for our context. The science of learning (and reading) and its application to education spans borders, cultures and languages. Thank you to neuroscientist @StanDehaene for your incredible work and to @ehanford for helping to share it. 📢 54:19 “The evidence is very clear. If you enhance decoding, you enhance language comprehension…Stop opposing decoding and comprehension. They go together.” Teaching phonics is critical AND so is the development of all aspects language comprehension. 📢 59:37 Effortful decoding is an “indispensable step” toward automatic decoding, which frees up cognitive space to focus on meaning. We must help kids get to automaticity as efficiently as possible, and the evidence is pretty clear about how to (and how not to) do this. 📢 1:00 Powerful info about scientists and government working together on #universalscreening, curriculum and teaching methods and the impact on student learning. (Spoiler: Teaching novice/struggling readers through whole language methods (and/or balanced literacy that incorporates whole language theory), is less effective and less efficient than teaching with explicit, systematic methods with a scope and sequence from simple to complex (i.e. #structuredliteracy). Science and education are not oppositional fields, and #equity is at the heart of this work. Please watch. You can’t “unknow” or ignore the implications of this information when you do. @bcedplan @bctf @LATABC @BCPrimaryTeach @BCSups @BCPVPA @BCSTA_News @RachnaSinghNDP @Dave_Eby youtu.be/_4NWaTw36i8?si=UkbN…

Session 3 of the Empowering Literacy series with @DyslexiaCanada started off with very welcome opening remarks from @Dave_Eby! The Premier’s presence and acknowledgment of the hard work BC educators are doing to implement evidence-based literacy practices were/are so appreciated. Thanks again to the Premier for joining us and for the $30 Million, 3 year investment in effective literacy practices for all #bced students. Our topic during this session was #UniversalScreening: What it is and is not, what measures are evidence-based and why, and its role in the #MTSS model, which is the topic of our 4th and final session next Wednesday, June 12th. In this session we were also joined by panelists Tina McDonald and Geraldine Lawlor from @CMSD82, who shared about the impact of the changes they, and the dedicated teachers in their district, have been making as they move to align literacy assessment and instructional practices with the scientific evidence about literacy and learning. It was a fantastic and inspirational discussion! We continue to welcome newcomers from #bced (and beyond) and you can catch up on any missed sessions by visiting Dyslexia Canada’s YouTube channel. Session 3 will be posted soon! Sign up for the sessions at this link to receive access to the materials and resources noted in each session. dyslexiacanada.org/en/events…

Thanks to all who attended Session 2 of the Empowering Literacy series for BC educators with @DyslexiaCanada . It was filled with learning and invaluable discussions! Sincerest thanks to panelists, Sangita Natha, Erica Roberts, Meaghan MacDonald and @KateLyonPR, for sharing your journeys and highlighting how practices that are evidence-based and science-informed, as well as relationship-focused and culturally responsive, lead to increased equity for all students in #bced. The impacts of #structuredliteracy that you described were inspirational. 🥰 If you missed it, the recording will be available soon, posted along with Session 1, on Dyslexia Canada's YouTube channel. Two more sessions to go! Join us online next Wednesday, June 5th at 7pm, when we dive into evidence-based #universalscreening. Here is the link, if you haven't already registered for the series. dyslexiacanada.org/en/events… See you next week! #LitBC2024 #scienceofreading @bcedplan @bctf @BCPVPA @BCSups
