I have always longed for a President who could unite the American people around universal values, not divide us, by implying that people that he disagrees with, are the "enemy". There was a time in America, where "we'll have to agree to disagree" was a more common statement, not "you are an evil person, who is trying to destroy this country". The latter accusation becomes confusing to some people, because apparently, being a Party supporter (otherwise, if you disagree, you are a Democrat, and hence you are the "enemy", according to the common rhetoric), means supporting price controls, wage redistribution, and nationalization of the economy. This, coming from people, who were accusing the Democratic Party followers, of supporting the same policies.
With immigration, the more restrictions are placed on it (Article I, Section VIII of the US Constitution only lists naturalization (citizenship) as a federal power), the more undocumented immigrants there are, the more there are deportations. The more deportations there are, the more there are protests. The more protests there are, the more crackdowns take place, the more there are violent responses. Violent responses are then used as a justification for more crackdowns and further support for policies. It is a "self-licking ice cream cone".
Other than the seeming contradiction of double standards (does it really matter what one supports, if it is done out of partisan loyalty?), what was described above is a tendency among some to support a "strategy of tension" or "strategia della tensione", where tensions are amped up. This was used in Italy, where the government policies were fully expected to lead to violent responses, from some of those who disagreed, with a full understanding that this behavior would add fuel to violence. This, was, then used to justify further crackdowns, with the goal of defeating the opposition through the amping up of tensions. The irony of some people supporting the current "strategy of tensions" is that it is coming from some the same people, who were recently complaining about division in this country. Tragically, when there is an act of violence on the other side (I condemn the shooting at the Dallas ICE facility), this is used as an explanation, of why further policies are necessary to "deal with violence on the Left" and continuing the same policies, while ignoring all of the protests and tensions that have occurred before, as a response to these policies.
Simply put, the more there is a doubling down on policies, the more likely there are to be protests. The more there are protests, the more there are crackdowns, which lead to more violent interactions. This is predictable. This is a dangerous path towards social unrest. Rather than tempering the tensions down, we have some people supporting the rise in tensions, either because they don't understand that this could have dangerous consequences for the nation, as a whole, or they are hoping for a violent social unrest to spread, believing that this would give the side they support an opportunity to defeat the opposition not through ballots, but through the use of force. Some would gladly support a civil war.
Before the 2024 election, the support for amping up tensions was seen in the polls, as millions of people came to embrace locking up political opponents and the use of political violence, amped up by political rhetoric. The desire to use the power of the State to destroy those who disagree, doesn't include any realization, that this would likely boomerang against those who support the use of force, after hoping that their desire to have the other side cornered to the wall, would be achieved. Rather than easing tensions, we have some people supporting adding fuel to the fire. It is time to say "no!" to political violence.
While I do support freedom of speech, and do not support policing it, I do believe that the use of the words like "Nazis" and "communists" to label other people, just for showing any disagreement, only adds fuel to tensions. This is done by both public officials, candidates for office, and repeated by some of the supporters. The support for dehumanization over political differences is the consequence of the rhetoric that has been spewed for years. This is coming from people who are trying to divide us, by focusing on wedge issues, that have little or no impact on our lives. They want us to fight each other with their "divide and conquer" strategy, while the economy is being weakened and people are being hurt. Don't fall for their trap by going after each other, because that is what they want! Let's not let them win!
