One of the most interesting things about Cerebras' Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE-3) is how they approach yield and silicon efficiency. Instead of making a few large dies like traditional GPUs, Cerebras packs ~970,000 extremely small AI cores (each ~0.05mm²) onto a single 300mm wafer. Even if some cores have defects, the system automatically bypasses them using built-in redundancy and dynamic routing. As a result, they can still deliver a functional chip with 900,000 active cores — achieving around 93% effective silicon utilization. This is very different from conventional chip yield thinking. At wafer scale, it's more about maximizing usable silicon rather than requiring every single part to be perfect.
