DOS won because sales people gave it away free with hardware, not because it was good, or better.. I could run 16 users on a single 286 using wordprocessing apps, spreadsheets apps, databases, email, development, and misc. key business apps, on text terminals all concurrently!!

Writing is hard. Building writing tools is fun. Here is my latest obsession: a terminal-based wordprocessor with full themes, custom padding, distraction-free mode, word count & more, built with Python and Textual #terminal #writing #wordprocessing #indiedev

It was nerve-wracking. I went to Sight and Sound College on Charing Cross Road. I failed my final wordprocessing exam. I never worked out how to do rulers and indents. I still can't paginate properly! I was the worlds worst secretary. It was so boring!

I did all of the above and more. So that is a zero. I used a Telex machine to send and receive messages internationally. Manual calculators, typewriters with carbon paper, mimeographs and wordprocessing machines. Also used records from the back of cereal boxes as a kid and old 78 rpm resin records.

Must admit, appeal of computers to begin w was ease of editing, storage, correspondence, but now have countless documents & emails in formats that wd need a specialist to recover, wd have loved to stay with original wordprocessing & email software

Does she seriously think schools don't provide laptops and computers? No kid is wordprocessing on their cell phone. And cell phone bans cover personal internet enabled devices, at least in my state, so no personal laptops, tablets, iPads, etc., allowed. It's a great equalizer.

Vintage? No sir, I had typing class on a typewriter, computer programming class for cobol, Pascal and DOS and a wordprocessing class. So, it's not vintag, just the 80s.

Why are people so afraid of change, particularly when it is oozing progress? I am old enough to remember when typesetting went from melting lead to wordprocessing and the storm this brewed up (after all it was their own media). The result was the small cost of loss of a small group of craftsmen that easily could be re-educated to a massive boost in publishing. Gutenberg 2.0 .

You have to hold down the "-" button on your phone's digital keyboard. On the computer, some wordprocessing programs will turn a "--" into a "—," but I often find myself needing to Google it and copy-paste it because makers of keyboards are misandrist troglodytes.

The fact that @windsurf_ai & Cascade have replaced my IDE, my wordprocessing app, my chat-convos with AI via browser ... it has become my everything app for writing. Pretty much everyone of my last 3 or 4 articles have been written in the IDE. humanjava.com/tag/human-ai-c…
