Justice Delivered: After 8 months of incarceration, Freedom finally comes. Justice is not just about laws, it’s about humanity, dignity, and the right to be free from unjust suffering. Mr. A.J. spent 8 painful months in incarceration at the Suleja Correctional Centre @correctionsng , not because he was found guilty, but because of a justice system weighed down by delays and inequality. Like so many others, he endured the emotional and physical toll of prolonged incarceration without conviction. It was during one of our AWJAI Prison Intervention visits that we met Mr. A.J. and learned of his situation. Moved by his case and determined to act, our team immediately intervened. Through determined legal advocacy, timely applications, and relentless follow-up, we secured his discharge and restored his freedom. When discharged Mr. A.J looked visibly weak and sickly our Senior lawyer gave him N10,000 to help with transportation and buy medications, and he was overwhelmed with emotions and gratitude. His story is not unique to thousands who remain in similar situations not because they are guilty but because they lack access to legal representation, resources, or support to effectively defend themselves or navigate the justice system. Freedom Secured: A Second Chance Through Restorative Justice Justice isn't just about punishment—it is about accountability, fairness, and a chance to make things right. Mr. I.F. had served 2 years in prison , with freedom still out of reach. A 60,000 Naira fine stood between him and a fresh start—one he couldn't afford to pay. On December 12, 2024, during the Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf’s visit @fcthighcourt to Suleja Correctional Centre, a commitment was made to uphold justice and restore dignity. We fulfilled that commitment by paying the 60,000 Naira fine levied on Mr. I.F. and secured his release, giving him the opportunity to reintegrate, rebuild, and contribute positively to society. Mr. I.F.’s story reminds us why we do what we do: to bring hope to the hopeless and ensure that no one should be left behind bars simply due to poverty. A Commitment to Justice and Renewal Following the Hon. Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf’s visit to the Suleja Correctional Centre on December 12, 2024, AWJAI @AWJAI_official honoured its pledge by paying the 60,000 Naira fine imposed on Mr. F.I., leading to his release today, December 20, 2024, from the Suleja custodial centre. Since the directive, our team has been moving between Yangoji, where the Area Court is situated, and the Suleja Correctional Centre to finalize the necessary processes for his release. Mr. F.I., convicted for theft in June 2022, had been sentenced to a 7-year prison term or a fine of 60,000 Naira, along with a compensation order of 1,200,000 Naira. In addition to securing his freedom, we ensured Mr. F.I. signed an undertaking outlining his plan to repay the compensation, reflecting accountability and the hope for a better future. At AWJAI, we champion restorative justice, understanding that true justice extends beyond punishment. It encompasses rehabilitation, reintegration, and providing second chances.
