More fun with my @zebra_medical @ButterflyNetInc. Young patient scanned with @skaapie7, IV drug user with clinical infective endocarditis. Ended up with a positive fungal blood culture. A very unhappy aortic valve. PoCUS helped us expedite cardiology transfer. #FMPoCUS #IMPoCUS

Had so much fun hanging out with my old mate @skaapie7 (Jonathan Naude) at Mitchells Plain Hospital, taking my new @ButterflyNetInc iQ for a spin courtesy of @zebra_medical. Found a pretty spine sign! #IMPoCUS #FMPoCUS
ALT Visualisation of the vertebral bodies above the liver and diaphragm indicates a right pleural effusion. A normal air-filled lung doesn’t transmit sound waves so the vertebral bodies stop at the diaphragm. But fluid transmits the sounds waves so the pleural effusion allows us to see the vertebral bodies above the diaphragm.

Summary:
-US useful for detecting effusions and guiding arthrocenteses
-USGI are highly accurate. Efficacy seen in knee, glenohumeral jt, elbow, wrist. More research needed for cost-effectiveness.
