In this insightful interview with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Prof. Vinod Subramaniam, President at the University of Twente, Netherlands, traces his nonlinear journey—from civil engineering to lasers, biophysics, and educational leadership—to show why the future belongs to those who can learn across boundaries. He makes a compelling case for T-shaped professionals: individuals with deep expertise in one field and the ability to collaborate fluently across disciplines, cultures, and even education levels. As global challenges grow more complex, he argues, engineers and scientists must blend systems thinking, design thinking, and teamwork with strong disciplinary depth. Drawing on experiences from Twente’s challenge-based learning ecosystem and the rise of technical medicine, he emphasises that interdisciplinarity must be a deliberate educational design, not a buzzword. He also cautions against “technology optimism”—reminding us that social sciences and human behaviour are central to real-world impact. For students, he urges purposeful exploration and building both depth and breadth. For educators, he calls for reimagining curricula, valuing collaboration, and preparing graduates for an AI-enabled, simulation-driven future. A conversation filled with clarity, honesty, and a powerful message: innovation thrives at the intersections. @iitmadras #InterdisciplinaryLearning#TechMedInnovation#IITMadras
