🚨 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭?! 𝐋𝐋𝐌𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐭 “𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐭,” 𝐭𝐨𝐨? 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: lnkd.in/gn7jd9Cg This project began with a lighthearted thought — 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘓𝘓𝘔𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘮𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴? — and turned into a full empirical study, led by Junyuan Hong (now Prof@NUS), Atlas Wang (Prof@UT), and Shuo XING (PhD @TAMU), we tested the '𝗟𝗟𝗠 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘁 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀' using real Twitter/X data. Our inspiration? The 𝗢𝘅𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: “𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘁” — defined as the cognitive decline that comes from overexposure to trivial, low-quality content, especially on social media. 𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱🤔: If humans can rot from doomscrolling, could LLMs, trained endlessly on internet data, suffer the same fate? 🧠 𝗧𝗟;𝗗𝗥 (𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀) • 📉 Declines in reasoning, long-context understanding, and safety alignment • 😈 Emergent dark traits (e.g., narcissism, psychopathy) • ⚠️ Damage that persists even after retraining — full recovery is hard once the “rot” sets in. 🔧 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 • 𝗖𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁-𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁: structured, external reflection reduces step-skipping better than self-reflection alone • 𝗥𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀, but… scaling instruction tuning, and clean continual pre-training improves scores, yet gaps remain — so prevention > cure • 𝗖𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲: during data curation, treat extreme short viral sensational content as a risk signal; add routine “health checks” for long-context and safety drift.
