‘hold fast’
I had a conversation this week with a mentee. It started simple and ended honest.
They asked what some of my current challenges are. I always welcome those questions because they pull you out of the surface and into the truth.
It brought me back to a simple reminder. Control what you can control.
When you get news you did not want or face resistance you did not expect, frustration will not change the outcome. Sometimes the quiet part finally gets said out loud. And now you know.
The question becomes, what will you do about it?
It may not be fair. It may not look like what you planned. But it is real. And that is where resilience lives, in how you respond once reality shows its hand.
I told them I would rather someone be honest and direct than polite with pretense. At least then you know what you are working with.
As we talked, they asked how I handle moments like that. I said, two words. Hold fast.
It is an old sailor’s phrase that means to grip the rope and stay steady when the storm comes. It is not about defiance. It is about discipline. It is about faith.
You do not control the wind or the weather. You control your hands, your heart, and your heading.
So you take it in, you adjust, and you move forward. The compass you carry has not changed. The waves might rise, the sky might darken, but the direction holds.
That is life. That is leadership. That is learning.
hold fast
