This week, I dove into a fascinating dataset from
@StatistaCharts about the average and minimum salaries of Major League Baseball (
@MLB) players over the past two decades. ⚾️
This is relevant as of late because in December, the
@Dodgers signed 2-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani to an record-breaking 10-year deal valued at an astounding $700 million, setting a new benchmark in professional baseball player earnings. 💰
Here were several insights from this dataset:
➢ In 2023, the average MLB player salary reached $4.9 million, marking a 106.8% increase compared to 2003.
➢ Minimum player salary climbed at a slightly faster rate and saw an 140% climb versus 2003, standing at $720K in 2023.
➢ Over the last 20 years, the ratio between the average and minimum salaries has fluctuated, peaking at 8.64x and dropping to a low of 6.3x, with a 2023 figure of 6.81x.
The dataset not only highlights the improving financial conditions of the average professional baseball player, but also emphasizes the league's commitment to equity in pay structure. The astronomical figures, particularly in the case of Shohei Ohtani's recent contract, underscore a new era in professional baseball.
In this
@TableauPublic dashboard, explore a comparison of MLB player average and minimum earnings over the past 20 years.
