（犠牲者意識の話の続き） 犠牲者意識というのも心理的な防衛の一種であって、つまり必要性があって形成されたものではある。それが形成され始めた自点では、自分が安全に感じるために、自分が「自分」と感じるものの統合性を保つために、それは必要と されたのだ。だからその存在自体が「悪い」ということではない。 しかし犠牲者意識というマスク（Pathworkの概念でいう仮面の自己）の問題点は、それが深いレベルでの自己の癒しと、人格の成長を不可能にするという点。 犠牲者意識を抱えたまま歳をとると、だんだん、それが「自分」であるという錯覚が強まり、「犠牲者である自分」が自己のアイデンティティの中心になっていく。そうなると、それを手放すことはますます難しくなる。 歳をとることは、人生経験を積み重ねて、より賢明になっていけるということだ。しかし自分の中にある低い自己（その自己中心性や攻撃性）と向き合うことを避け続ける場合には、防衛や仮面はますます厚く、硬くなっていき、時間とともに自分を変えることが難しくなっていくということでもある。

このところずっと専門クラスで、マスク（Pathworkの概念で仮面の自己、理想化された自己イメージ）のことを話しているが、 マスクは、自分の中にある低い自己の自分勝手さや攻撃性を他人の目から隠すために形成される。そして本気ではそれを何とかしようとはしない（取り組むことを恐れている）場合に、厚みを増していく。 マスクには幾つかのヴァリエーションがあり、日本文化圏で多いのは「善人マスク／いい人の仮面」だと思うが、「犠牲者意識」もこのヴァリエーションになる。
