This morning, I eventually had the time and brain capacity to write and post my reply to Dr. Levine's backtracking comment on my Substack. Its not comfortable to call out bad behaviour by physicians, but its absolutely necessary. My reply to his comment is not for me, but to hopefully help him to understand, in no uncertain terms how his behaviour is perpetuating the problem instead of resolving it. UPDATE on interaction with Dr. Levine. I'm grateful that Dr. Levine took the time to respond to me. But I'm disappointed that it lacks more accountability and rather uses tone shifting and blame shifting. This highlights the systemic problems with psychiatry. Dr. Levine now uses conciliatory language in his response, which feels off to me because I feel like his response is an attempt to maintain his authority while also appearing reasonable. I feel like hes trying to to have it both ways: 1) keeping his provocative public stance for his own audience, while 2) playing the empathetic listener in his comment to me. I also feel like this is an attempt to reposition himself as being on my side against the mental health industrial complex, however, i feel like he's ignoring the fact that he was the one who sent the original, dismissive article to me. He is trying to separate his professional identity from the very ideology he promoted in his first post. His sudden 'middle ground" feels dishonest because it wasn't present in his initial Substack to me. If we are really going to bridge the gaps and truly prevent future and further harm there needs to be honesty, acknowledgement, accountability, and respect. I urge psychiatry to make these long overdue changes, not for me but for those disbelieved who require validation of the harm perpetuated and the true wellbeing of future patients of psychiatry. I'm grateful that Dr. Levine followed me on Substack, I hope that we can have more dialogue in the future that bridges the gaps. I will respond directly to Dr. Levine when I'm able to articulate myself in the way I need to.
