☁️ The @awscloud AWS All Builders Welcome Grant deadline is tomorrow. If you're thinking about applying, this is your sign to go for it! A lot of people ask me how to get started in tech. It’s not just about learning a programming language or a trendy framework. It’s about taking that one bet on yourself — even when it seems scary. And more than anything, it’s about finding an amazing community to build with. In 2021, I was still trying to find my way in tech, hoping to become a software engineer one day. I didn’t know many people in tech. I didn’t even know what re:Invent really was. I was still building my skills in cloud. But I took a chance and applied for the All Builders Welcome Grant, and it completely changed my life. I almost didn't apply for ABW. At the time, I was wondering if I was even cut out for this industry. But something in me said, "the worst they can say is 'no', but the best they can say is 'yes'. So why not?" So I applied. That one “yes” gave me the opportunity of a life time: - 🎟️ A full re:Invent conference pass - ✈️ Flight to and from the conference - 🚌 Transportation in and around the conference - 🏨 Hotel accommodations for the entire conference - 🤝 Lifelong friends, colleagues, and mentors - 👋 Incredible networking opportunities - 🥲 Memories that will leave you all nostalgic forever Since then, I’ve spoken at conferences, collaborated with builders around the world, worked on global AWS workloads, built a business, and made lifelong friends. These are opportunities I could not have even dreamed about back in 2021. This week, in New York for the AWS Summit NYC, I had a very full-circle moment, surrounded by folks I have the privilege of calling teammates, colleagues, and friends. We work in different industries, have different skillsets, and got into tech in very different ways. What unities is that we are All Builders Welcome Grant recipients. Whenever there are events, conferences, or big things happening in tech, we already have a group chat set up and are already planning a meetup before the events even start. This is all thanks to the incredible work AWS has poured into ABW to make it what it is today. What do you do when tech changes, quickly?  When software changes, we must evolve with it. So how do we do that? What does that look like…? 👀 2 years ago, @awscloud AWS Hero Brian Tarbox needed a new website. So I built him a shiny new website, built in @vuejs, with lots of dynamic CSS. To deploy the site, we leveraged @AWSAmplify AWS Amplify, and it was a super smooth process: ✅ Distribution to Amazon CloudFront ✅ Website hosting managed by AWS Amplify ✅ Git-based deployments using GitHub  ✅ Full-scale CI/CD pipeline in AWS Amplify  ✅ A suite of AWS services ready to go if/when needed Everything was all set… except one thing: ⚠️ The website’s code repository was stored in my @github account This worked great for the past few years.  But Brian wanted to make changes to his site and own the CI/CD process. And then… ⚠️ AWS released Amplify Gen 2 — a completely reworked workflow with CDK. So what happens when you need to: 1️⃣ Migrate from Amplify Gen 1 to Gen 2  2️⃣ Transfer repository ownership  3️⃣ Keep all DNS settings intact  ...all at the same time? Pure chaos. 😅 Over the course of 2 hours, we put our heads together to solve this puzzle: 🔄 Failed multiple times trying GUI reconnections  💻 Had to resort to AWS CloudShell CLI commands  🔎 Used @perplexity_ai to help debug error messages  🛠️ Created custom IAM roles for deployment permissions  🌐 Reconfigured DNS settings in Route53 We recorded the entire journey — messy parts and all — to show what real cloud migrations look like. It’s Day 1 of @HashiCorp’s #HashiConf and I’m diving into some powerful tools that are changing the way I build software! 🧑‍💻☁️ I’ve been using #Terraform to automate many of my software builds these past two years and it’s felt like a superpower. Instead of deploying everything manually, I can use Infrastrucure as Code to automate and templatize the whole process. Read: *A breath of fresh air* I’m also excited to learn about ways to work with Terraform and learn better best practices as well as learning about new tooling like Nomad, Consul, Vault, Packer, and more. I’m hoping to learn more about building modern tech stacks to simplify building, deploying, and managing Kubernetes, containers, and distributed workloads. As always, I’m keeping an eye on how to automate and scale on @awscloud with IaC so HashiConf came at the perfect time.
