I'm a Sig man. My pronouns are P320 and P365. I am a shotgunner by trade though. Wingshooting is an art. Like you, I love the smell of freshly spent gunpowder, especially on a crisp September morning.

At least it wasn't bad as the 3cm MK 108, this chart for the Bf 109 G-6/U4 suggests the shells dropped almost 2 meters after just 300 meters of travel! It also shows the complexity of having weapons chambered in different calibers sited in different parts of the aircraft The G-6/U4 was also armed with a pair of 13mm machineguns in the cowling and a 20mm cannon in a gondola under each wing, three different weapon types with three different trajectories, sometimes more when different ammunition types did not always have the same ballistic characteristics The chart suggests that it was only between 100 and 400 meters that the pilot could aim at an aircraft-sized target and expect most projectiles to strike it without compensating for drop as all trajectories were at a maximum of around 70cm above the sight line This also does not account for horizontal convergence, of course such a spread tends to ensure that at least some hits will be scored but the majority of rounds are going to miss an aircraft targeted from behind except at very specific ranges It's almost analogous to wingshooting, typically less than 5% of the shot from a shotgun cartridge will actually strike the bird and it's no surprise that most top-scoring fighter pilots tended to hold their fire until their targets filled their sights

I should clarify - what a "shotgun" is (as that term has come to be defined) is not defined as "fires multiple projectiles". There's a clear link back to fowling pieces from anything we'd consider a shotgun today. There's debate about if blunderbusses came before or after fowling pieces, but the things we call shotguns today resemble fowling pieces much moreso than blunderbusses. Fowling pieces were derived from smoothbore muskets, and people certainly had put multiple projectiles into muskets before, but the impetus for fowling peices was the unsuitability of muskets for wingshooting. The factors that set fowling pieces apart followed on to the things we'd call shotguns today.

Look, history is on your side. I'm just asking: does the spacer on the back of the gun do more good than 8" of extra barrel? For a shotgun, 100% yes: wingshooting is all about fit and pointability. For a service rifle that may need to be used in close quarters with little warning, maybe not.
