"We need to point the finger of blame firmly at decades of failed economic policy... We need to build – and finance – new socially rented homes. Above all we need to stand up and make the positive case for diversity and immigration." Excellent @jas_bhalla linkedin.com/pulse/i-cant-be…

History can and does repeat itself. If anyone needs reminding of what a race riot is, watch the @Channel4 series Defiance about violence by the far right against South Asians in Britain in the ‘70s: channel4.com/programmes/defi…

Our elders were invited to this country after hundreds of years of colonial rule that contributed to the industrial revolution. They worked the most difficult jobs in factories for paltry pay. We contribute billions to the economy today. We built Britain and we aren't going away.

Good thread this
Stronger housing targets are both welcome and necessary, though sadly not sufficient. I'm hearing more and more about the viability not stacking up, not just for social housing but for market housing too. In many areas it simply costs more to build a house than you'd sell it for.

In stronger housing markets, building ought to remain viable via lower land prices. But landowners don't always respond to a fall in demand by selling at a lower price. Often they sit tight instead hoping prices will rise again.

Last week on The Brief, Merlin was joined by architect Jas Bhalla on our 150th ep. They discuss urgent financial threats to council housing, Lloyds Bank's plans to transform back offices into social housing, the new infrastructural body NISTA, and more. ow.ly/X0lF50SI5cW

It's brilliant to see record level of Sikh representation in Parliament. It was the privilege of my life to be the first Sikh woman elected to UK Parliament. Congratulations to all my new @UKLabour colleagues - I look forward to working together.

Fantastic to see 11 MP’s from Sikh Heritage elected, a real milestone for @SikhsInPolitics. Looking forward to working with the new Govt addressing Sikh issues. Disappointed with @Conservatives for not taking @Sikh representation seriously & letting down a model Community

Every week, I receive a request from a Local Authority or their consultant asking for advice on how to digitize their Design Codes. The low level of digital literacy in the planning and built environment sector is alarming! We need to do better.

Inflation today is driven by monopolistic supply, not excess demand. Energy, food and more. The whole discussion about interest rates ignores that. Go after the source (anti-monopoly, and the multiple causes of “excess” profits ie “rents”). @IsabellaMWeber very good on this.

This British nightmare is due to three main factors: 1) Woefully inadequate rates of housebuilding 2) A dwindling social housing sector (yes we do need social housing specifically) 3) The erosion of financial support for those unable to afford market rents
