Coal, climate and computationalism. I’m beginning to feel AI is the new coal inasmuch as many believe it can not only solve every problem but that it’s impervious to climate change (which it isn’t) and is therefore able to have dominion over nature (which it doesn’t).

RECORD 2024 ANNUAL ATMOSPHERIC CO2 INCREASE 2024 Record Leap In Atmospheric CO2 involving Reduced Carbon Sinks. Committed (unavoidable) increased global heat and ocean acidification for decades. Increased global warming acceleration and further increase from failing carbon sinks. This points to no future. wmo.int/sites/default/files/… #co2 #climatechange #globalwarming

RT @ClimateDad77: For decades we worried that AI would take over and destroy us. But AI is just the final tool in the corporate psychopath…

You made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive”? Really. Is that why it has been recommending kids harm and kill themselves?
14 Oct 2025
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right. Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases. In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing). In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Altogether, AI data centers now use more electricity than most countries. We didn’t ask for any of this. These data centers steal our jobs, energy, and water. Shut them all down & turn them into social housing units.

ICYMI: catastrophic 73% average decline in wildlife populations likely to be followed in the next 5-10 decades by the extinction of up to 30-40% of all species on Earth or even 50-60% or more. Industrial capitalism is one of the most destructive forces the planet has ever seen.
The Living Planet Index is the biodiversity metric that always claims the headlines. Unfortunately, many of these headlines are wrong. The index is very easy to misinterpret. The Living Planet Index reports an average decline of 73% across tens of thousands of wildlife populations since 1970. This does not tell us anything about the number of individuals, species or populations lost, or even the share of populations that are shrinking. Before reporting on the Living Planet Index we should understand what it actually tells us about the world’s wildlife. We should also be aware of the misconceptions and pitfalls of using this index to capture the changes in more than 34,000 of the world’s animal populations.

Thoughts on the Anthropic lawsuit for $1.5B? Any other authors out there looking for compensation for data / books accessed without permission as I am? Thoughts on what this means for “free use?” Does this harm trust for GenAI? Why or why not? Thanks for your insights.

The Trump administration and @ENERGY policies have already cost Americans 91,000 clean energy jobs and counting. They are actively killing jobs in rural places and small towns across this country, and they have no plan to replace them.

Congrats & excited to see how that surplus can be used to buy electric equipment for the ubiquitous/omnipresent gas leaf blowers overtly harming mental & physical health of all in Westfield. Toxic fumes travel great distances & harm all the time where electric won’t. #itblows
