I signed it. The data are clear. Standardized tests are the best predictor of college success and the least biased indicator we have. Getting rid of them was incredibly foolish.
"Current admissions practices do not provide a sufficiently reliable check on mathematical readiness for STEM majors."
Over 280 University of California STEM faculty have signed an open letter calling on the Board of Regents to reinstate standardized testing in admissions:
But, but, but this thing or another thing or a hundred other things ... you are exactly right. Build, baby, build. Then build 10x more. Anywhere and everywhere, ideally walkable, dense, and transit, but, in the end, just build. Period.
ACA7 is aimed at ending Prop 209’s application to PUBLIC EDUCATION. While it can’t overrule the Sup. Ct’s decision outlawing race discrimination in college admissions, it’s aimed at allowing such discrimination in admissions for K-12 gifted & talented programs (and more).
End this madness! The UC application system is so opaque, it's awful for students, and bad too! At least the SAT is some kind of measuring stick, more objective than the others. If you find a better tool, great, but don't abandon one because it is not perfect.
Many blame the UC Regents for banning the use of the SAT in admissions.
I watched the full board meeting in the archives. The truth is many Regents supported keeping the SAT, but they were pressured away from doing so by then-UC President Janet Napolitano.

This is a terrific article by John Tierney arguing women aren’t discriminated against in twenty-first-century America—but men increasingly are.

Golden rice opposition pisses me off so much. Stop spending your energy opposing it. If you think it's a bad idea (it is not), spend your energy doing what you think is better.
Golden rice is a no-brainer: a publicly funded, non-proprietary genetically modified crop that combats vitamin A deficiency, a major cause of childhood blindness and mortality - yet it's opposed by many Western environmental groups and NGOs. 24 years ago, in The Blank Slate, I decried this primitive essentialist and tribal thinking. I'm sad to learn that this mindless opposition persists today. goldenrice.org/
SB 79 — our bill allowing more housing near public transportation — just received final approval by the Senate & IS ON ITS WAY TO THE GOVERNOR!
This bill is a huge step for housing, transit & climate action. Thank you colleagues!
Blew the whistle in @WSJopinion on ideological rigidity in therapy training. A week later, I am fired from my internship with the regret of my boss. This field is in crisis. The public needs to know.
For some reason, I was just thinking about how Trump’s former chief of staff tried to warn us right before the election that Trump was a fascist who wanted to rule us like a dictator … and the New York Times put that story on page A12
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack, where Islamist gunmen killed 12 people in response to the magazine's controversial cartoons.
So, naturally, we should all share the cartoons on X, highlighting the importance of free speech and the right to satire.
What a fucking bullshit. Autism and vaccine link has been investigated rigorously -- but nothing found, apart from Wakefield's fraudulent studies. See here for several links: chop.edu/vaccine-education-c…
"Science more dogmatic than Catholic church in the 17th century"? Really? Any basis for that claim?
Not to say "science" (academia is a better phrase in this context) has no problems -- there are several. But Thiel spews BS here.
