BREAKING: scientists hold back tears and shake their heads sadly as they explain utterly compromised COP29 climate conference was meant to be the last chance to organise rapid and deep emissions cuts for any chance of staying well below essentially unsurvivable 2°C 🧵

I see @MichaelEMann's 1982 Exxon internal report and raise you a 1980 presentation by API to Exxon, Chevron, and BP predicting that 2.5 degrees of global warming would be so devastating to human civilization it would to bring "world economic growth to a halt."
I see your '89 Shell internal report and raise you an '82 ExxonMobil internal report warning of "catastrophic" events (courtesy of @InsideClimate) #NewClimateWar

Nothing to see here -- just an internal report by Shell from 1989 precisely predicting the "violent weather" and "deluges" that just destroyed half of Appalachia, and summing up expected climate chaos with the comment, "Civilisation could prove a fragile thing."

Hurricane Helene has killed at least 100 people caught in catastrophic flooding and landslides across the Southeast. It is projected to be one of the costliest hurricanes in U.S. history. Climate scientist Peter Kalmus says this was “caused by the fossil fuel industry."

In which I request my own nationalisation. It's ridiculous that governments leave it to the private and voluntary sectors to communicate the need for environmental action. We cannot do it alone. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

I’m in NYC preparing for civil disobedience this morning, which is to say, I’m acting out of my conscience and sense of obligation that comes from what I know as a biologist. Today my body is a data point. And it’s full of love and resolve. #SummerOfHeat My statement:

Mary Robinson reacts to the release of the draft text at #COP28: “It is not good enough to say you recognise and respect the science but then fail to take heed of its dire warnings in the collective action you commit to. It is not good enough to note with ‘alarm and serious concern’ the findings of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and the damage being caused by climate change but then fail to put in place the steps the science recommends. It is not good enough to say you reaffirm the Paris Agreement but to then fail to commit to a full fossil fuel phase out. It is not good enough to use weak language or to permit loopholes for the fossil fuel industry to continue to contribute to the very problem countries are meant to be committed to tackling here in Dubai. Adequate time and opportunity still lie ahead, provided that nations promptly return to the negotiating table, equipped with the resolve required for a crisis of this magnitude and a readiness to undertake the necessary measures. This current version of the COP28 text is grossly insufficient.” Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders #DraftText #COP28UAE

The science is clear: we must phase out fossil fuels. That's why I've joined over 2000 CEOs, NGOs, scientists, heath experts, youth faith leaders to ask decisionmakers to prove which side of history they are on--because #LaterIsTooLate. Read more: bteam.org/our-thinking/news/…

Most important point here is made by @KHayhoe: “Every 10th of a degree of warming matters. Every bit matters...per 10th of a degree of avoided warming, we save, we prevent risk, we prevent suffering. And that’s pretty powerful.” latimes.com/environment/stor… @whereishayley @ByIanJames
