Two veteran camp elephants of Assam's Forest Department, Pramila and Purnima, were accorded a ceremonial farewell at Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve on June 8 after years of service in wildlife conservation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the elephants were honoured with a guard of honour, traditional gamochas and a special farewell ceremony in recognition of their contribution to forest protection and conservation efforts.
Forest personnel, mahouts and conservation staff participated in the event, celebrating the role of camp elephants in anti-poaching operations, wildlife monitoring, habitat management, rescue missions and ecotourism activities. The elephants, dressed in traditional attire, were taken in a procession before receiving the ceremonial send-off.
The Forest Department also inducted five newly trained elephants โ Manalisa, Raja, Bubul, Bijoy and Birshing โ into service. The elephants underwent a three-month training programme under experienced mahouts, where they were trained in commands, patrolling protocols, field operations and interaction with forest staff.
According to officials, the new recruits will assist in anti-poaching patrols, wildlife monitoring, habitat management and other conservation activities in Manas.
The retired elephants will continue to receive lifelong care and veterinary support from the Forest Department.
