Check out this blog post about my lab's new technology where we engineered bacteria to mineralize a glass coating around themselves, which allows them to focus light like tiny microlenses! Just out in PNAS: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.24…
I'm trying something new: A (possibly) daily blog about biology and engineering. I'd like to see whether I can emulate Derek Lowe for, say, one month. My first post is about bacteria that were engineered to act as microlenses, focusing beams of photons.

Delighted to support iGEM Rochester's CyanoPrint project that tackles climate change! Using modified cyanobacteria like Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, they're creating a bio-photovoltaic cell to sequester CO2 and generate green energy. #iGEM2024 #synbio @ur_igem

Microbes were engineered to "focus light into photonic nanojets." A sea-sponge enzyme, called silicatein, was fused to an E. coli protein that sits on the cell surface, called OmpA. The silicatein mineralized a polysilicate shell around the microbe that scatters beams of light.

Our preprint on engineered bacterial microlenses is out! We engineered bacteria to display sea sponge enzymes on their outer membranes. These bacteria can self-assemble a bioglass coating around themselves, and focus light into bright, photonic nanojets. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

The silicatein-expressing cells capture and scatter light into long jets that are focused a few um away from the cells. The cells are alive for several months after encapsulation, opening the possibility to sense-and-respond to their environment.
