Today is my daughter Awa’s birthday. Of all the roles I have been entrusted with — academic, diplomatic, public — the one that has taught me most is the simplest: being a father. Daughters teach you patience without lecture, courage without volume, and the quiet discipline of loving someone whose path is their own to walk. I am grateful to Allah SWT for her, and for the privilege of watching her become the bright, kind, thoughtful young woman she is. May this year bring her clarity, barakah, and every righteous door her heart has prayed for. Happy birthday, Awa. Elevating The Gambia’s Voice @ the #HRC61 side event: “Advancing Accountability and Justice for the Durable Solution of the Rohingya Crisis” Co-organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva and the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh.  The humanitarian crises, relentless campaign of repression and systematic denial of fundamental rights of the people of Myanmar represents one of the biggest human rights challenges of our time. The Gambia is particularly concerned by the escalating violence against civilians, forced recruitment and sexual violence perpetrated by all parties to the conflict.’   We remain deeply concerned by the continued suffering of the Rohingya Muslim minority. Nearly a decade after the commencement of the genocidal violence against them, it is disheartening to note that millions remain displaced, stateless, persecuted, and vulnerable to life threatening health complications. We note with serious concern reports of waning international support for the people of Myanmar and the political will to ensure accountability for grave human rights violations. Accountability remains the only safeguard against further atrocities and for ensuring justice for all victims.
