Hanif Abdurraqib on basketball follies, rooting for a hopeless and hapless team, and awaiting the season that the Minnesota Timberwolves go 82–0: newyorker.com/sports/sportin…
The lamest person you know who calls it "sports ball" should watch this...
Sports is culture, it's interwoven into our identity as a society. Where else can you find 40 men belting their national anthem out in a foreign country...
Maybe it’s just me… but winning championships doesn’t feel the same anymore.
The celebrations feel quieter. Less emotional. Players and coaches don’t seem to explode with joy the way they used to.
Yeah, every game and moment is different but watching teams like the Seahawks and Thunder celebrate this past year… it didn’t even feel like they just won a world title.
We used to see pure chaos. Guys leaping into each other’s arms. Tears. Screaming iconic lines like “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!”
That raw, unforgettable emotion used to define championships. Now it feels… muted and different.
I’ll thread some video examples for reference.
I’m in the minority but I really enjoy basketball and my 82 games. Love coming home on a boring ass Tuesday to watch a Houston/clips or a Monday after work to watch Detroit muck it up with Charlotte… it’s not boring to me. Sorry
re: the washington post gutting their sports section
there is nothing more cynical than gambling companies being the only people willing to pay for any sports media. deeply dystopian shit
For us sports fans of a certain age, the sports section of the newspaper taught us how to read. I didn’t grow up with the Washington Post sports section, but I did grow up because of it. Today’s a sad day for my friends and for all of us.
Victor Wembanyama’s full comments today on the shooting of another civilian by federal agents in Minneapolis:
“PR has tried, but I'm not going to sit here and give some politcally correct [answer]. Every day I see the news and I'm horrified. I think it's crazy that some people might make it seem like or make it sound like it's acceptable, like the murder of civilians is acceptable. I read the news and sometimes I'm asking very deep questions about my own life. I'm concious also saying everything that's on my mind will have a cost that's too great for me right now, so I'd rather not get into too many details. It's terrible. I know I'm a foreigner, but I live in this counrtry and I am concerned.”

We did the first pilot today for Vermont Public's forthcoming sports show, and I can die happy knowing:
1) I repped my Heat
2) Our guest asked what Jayson Tatum's return would mean for Jordan Walsh's minutes 😭😭 (HE KNOWS BALL)
The New York Knicks will not raise an NBA Cup championship banner at Madison Square Garden, sources tell ESPN. The Lakers and Bucks raised banners for NBA Cup titles over the last two years. Knicks will celebrate with home fans Friday.
The hostility at the rental prices is a little frustrating and kind of proves to me that a lot of ppl who use Letterboxd don’t actually care about movies. Yes, you need to pay equivalent to a movie ticket to watch a film that you can’t watch anywhere else. That’s what PVOD is!
