Anyone remember Akshay Gupta? Last year he was riding a CapMetro bus to an entrepreneurship networking event in Austin when a mentally ill vagrant stepped up behind him and stabbed him to death. The courts ruled Kandel incompetent, and in May extended his stay at the state hospital. The attacker was homeless and had been cycling in and out of Travis County jail for years. There was literally no reason to let him out after his previous crimes -- prosecutors and judges knew he was mentally ill and a danger to the public. But they kept letting him out, until he predictably escalated his violence and a man was dead. Gupta was in Austin an entrepreneur who moved to Austin to build technology to help seniors walk. His corpse was sent back to India, where his parents live. "Everything is over for us," his mother said.
“Hey, I am Akshay Gupta’s friend.” That’s how the message began—from Jasmine, his friend and classmate at Penn State. “He used to cheer me up every time I felt like quitting my PhD.” But this time, there was no cheer from Akshay. Jasmine came to Austin with one purpose: to see her friend’s body. Looking at his body at the funeral house on Saturday was the most gut-wrenching experience of my life, she says. Akshay Gupta was 30 years old. A builder. A giver. A brother. A son. “He was so full of life. Always made everyone laugh.” He always made time for others. He mentored. He volunteered. He cooked for the homeless. In 2023, Jasmine and Akshay went to Princeton together, where he took first place at a national hackathon. He had won similar awards at Brown, UPenn, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale. His brilliance was constant, his success, earned. “He was super intelligent and hardworking,” Jasmine said. He had options—including a lucrative job offer from Amazon. But Akshay was focused on his health-tech startup, building something that would help seniors walk safely, avoid falls, and live independently. He didn’t just believe in what he was building. He believed in where he was building it. He believed in America. “America was a dreamland,” Jasmine said. “He was more American than anyone.” He defended the country’s ability to turn talent into success. “He wanted to make it big, and he was on the right path.” Last Wednesday, Akshay was preparing to give a talk about his startup at a local meetup. He never made it. He didn’t own a car yet. He had just moved to Austin from Florida and was staying with a roommate. They’d considered California, but thought Austin would be a better place to launch. So Akshay boarded the bus. He sat down. Moments later, he was bleeding out. Then dead. It was the first time he rode that bus. And the last. “We all never felt this much pain,” Jasmine said. “He just died randomly.” He was stabbed in the neck with a butcher knife—an unprovoked attack by a mentally ill vagrant with a long history of crimes. A man the system had released again and again, despite a trail of charges—misdemeanors, felonies, two violent offenses. “A person that amazing just died for no reason—by someone who should have been in a hospital.” Jasmine says that Akshay’s mother hasn’t eaten since hearing the horrific news. His family, desperate to reach his body, couldn’t get visas in time—not his brother, not his relatives. Only his father made it, flying alone to Austin to bring his son’s body home. On Saturday, Akshay’s father stood in silence at the funeral home beside Jasmine. Jasmine says he didn’t speak. He didn’t cry. Until it was time to leave. Then: “Let’s go home, son.”

I hate to break it to you - but the United States is an absolute, incoherent shitshow. The idea that we have ‘representative government’ is ridiculous. If that were true we would not have wasted billions killing Iranians for no reason at all. Some people wanted this - but the voters who elected this government did not. Let’s go further. When Trump goes to China - he brings our ‘great billionaires’ with him. I can’t think of any more obvious symbol that we live in an oligarchy that does everything it can to manipulate outcomes - and that voting is a bit of a joke. It’s like he’s bringing with him ‘the ruling elite.’ Because that is what he did. We have at least 40 million illegal aliens living here. Our business ‘leaders’ engineered this by bribing politicians to keep the border open - because they wanted to pay low wages and make mucho $$ for themselves. When people objected because their incomes were falling - the business leaders accused them of racism and funded Barack Obama to become POTUS. The USA is $40 trillion in debt - and no one has a plan to solve that problem. Absolutely no one. This will blow up one day - and it will destroy normal people who save in dollars - because the unspoken plan is to destroy the currency and save the rich and destroy the rest. But people who own our homes - like Blackstone or Blackrock - won’t care because their assets will follow inflation. Everyone else will be reduced to paupers renting from them - their bank accounts gone. The United States today is hopelessly dysfunctional. It lacks a coherent population that can even agree on anything. It is bankrupt - but the rest of the world is propping it up because they are also scared of what happens when the dollar collapses. It doesn’t have any smart leaders - and we have to watch insiders doing oil trades to make $$ on the Iran war - and the administration itself sells shit coins. Our foreign policy is a total joke - not strategic in any way at all. It is driven by special interests, and then not even followed through. And people are actuality making money on it - pump and dump coming straight from the White House. This is a hell of a way to celebrate 250 Years! At least we can have a cage match on the White House lawn that degrades our entire history and underscores just how bad and ridiculous things are! Thank you for your attention to this matter! Enjoy the circus! If you’re lucky you will be dead when the music stops!

Still thinking about how crazy this is. Only in the press world could you do something this scandalous, never provide an explanation, be hired by multiple other outlets in the meantime, and then get promoted to head of the White House press corps.
I'm honored to be elected president of the @whca for 2028–2029. I look forward to serving my colleagues across the White House press corps to ensure robust and independent coverage of the presidency. I’m excited to build on the strengths of the association, including our shared commitment to a free and fair press.

Looks great! Congress should make this sort of federal building design standard by passing my bill, the Beautifying Federal Civic Architecture Act
The U.S. government just unveiled the majestic Greco-Deco design for the new federal courthouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The building is at once monumental and welcoming, classical and original. The iris capitals are an inspired touch, drawing on Tennessee’s natural beauty and weaving it into the stone of a federal building. The Chattanooga courthouse is precisely the kind of building that President Trump’s Executive Order on federal architecture—“Making Federal Buildings Beautiful Again”—was designed to produce. When the courthouse is completed, it will stand as the living proof that the Order represents wise and humane public policy—something all Americans, regardless of political party, can and should support. Beautiful public buildings are not a partisan matter; they belong to everyone.

Pure insanity from the federal court filing system that everyone is required to use. While we’re at it we should eliminate the fees that PACER charges and have an accessible court system that anyone can utilize for free.
Stop the PACER password madness. First MFA then this, which means everyone will write down PWs, making them less safe. No basis to believe PACER was compromised from filer side. Next: passwords must be 255 characters, changed every 24 hrs, accessible only from a SCIF.

The craziest part of Musk becoming a trillionaire is that I remember when the federal deficit was only 160 billion (2007) At that time, the national debt was 9 trillion, which seemed like an unfathomably large number. Now the national debt is $40 trillion, the deficit is $1.5 trillion when things are going well but no one talks about it because the Republicans have given up on the concept of fiscal sanity.

I mostly agree with this with the following caveat: It might not be legal fraud to grab 1,000 ballots, mark your favorite candidate, and have a homeless person sign it with a smiley face But it is a moral fraud because you've just disenfranchised 1000 voters who actually care about their vote, care about the results, care about their city If that is what is happening (which seems likely) then it calls into question the very nature of representative democracy. Why do we even have a vote if the vote result isn't determined by individuals but by NGOs who can harvest as many votes as they want using these strategies?
I'll be writing about this for NR, but I will lay the Los Angeles situation out here flatly. Pratt didn't lose because of fraud. Pratt lost because, just like Chicago, it's an 80/20 Democratic city. In fact, he seems to have placed exactly where was in the final polls. The real scandal is what's legal: with a 100% mail-in system, an endless window for ballot counting and legal mechanisms for unions and organizers to harvest (and later "cure") ballots, California's system is a purpose-built black box designed to fuel paranoia. And for no other purpose than that it allows Democratic intra-party battles to become a test of organizing strength for NGOs and unions. People are right to be angry about the system. But even the way the votes are being counted now makes perfect (albeit disgusting) sense without recourse to claims of "fraud."

Reasonable people can understand why Senator Susan Collins votes the way she does. She represents a diverse political group in Maine, yet she still manages to cast tough votes. However, Murkowski’s situation is different. Alaska is not Maine.
While I support funding to secure our borders and protect the homeland, I do not support bypassing the annual appropriations process by providing funding for multiple years in a manner that diminishes both congressional direction and oversight. By choosing to appropriate funding for three fiscal years instead of one, this measure weakens the normal budgeting process and sets another precedent for avoiding it when we find ourselves in disagreement. In doing so, it reduces Congress’ ability to apply reasonable checks on immigration policy for the remainder of this administration and into the next. Had this measure provided immigration funding for one year, included clear restrictions on what those funds can be used for, and eliminated any potential for taxpayer dollars to be allocated to the administration’s brazen ‘anti-weaponization’ fund, I likely would have voted for it. The final bill fell short on all of those fronts, so I opposed it.
