It sounds like France’s military chief is bravely attempting to initiate exactly the kind of “national conversation on defence and security” that is not happening in the UK
The absence of an honest debate here is either because our military chiefs don’t want to tell it as it is or (more likely) they’re not being allowed to speak freely by @10DowningStreet & @DefenceHQ (and too often not being able to speak at all)
The UK’s new Chief of the Defence Staff @richardknighton talked last week about “warfighting readiness” being his top priority but he did not take that next step to spell out what this might mean for every single person in our country

Not long after I posted this Trump went bonkers on Zelensky. It is very worrying.
Every claim he makes — from America giving a lot more than Europe to Ukraine, Zelensky support’s being down to 4% and Zelensky being a dictator because he’s not called elections (neither did Churchill when we fought for our freedom) — is demonstrably untrue.
More worrying than that every one is a Kremlin talking point/piece of Putin propaganda.
Why does Trump slag off Zelensky yet never have a harsh word to say about Putin.

The brutal stalemate on the Ukraine/Russian front line makes the case for peace talks to explore what can be agreed to stop the killing.
But there are times when the Trump White House forgets who it is dealing with.
Putin started the biggest land war in Europe since Hitler. It was unprovoked and unnecessary.
His actions have killed hundreds of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians — and maimed many more.
He has fired his missiles on Ukrainian apartment blocs and train stations.
He has tried to freeze Ukrainian civilians into surrender by crippling electric-power plants.
His troops have kidnapped hundreds of Ukrainian-born children and relocated them to unknown new homes in Russia.
Ukrainian troops have been tortured and executed with Gestapo-like barbarism.
Realpolitik may mean we have to deal with this monster. But let us not forget he is a monster and presides over a barbaric regime.

I recalled the story of Johnny Smythe, who served as a navigator in 623 Squadron during WWII and was Empire Windrush's senior officer.

A @RAFBrizeNorton Atlas carried out another vital air drop of aid to the people who need it in Gaza.
The operational drop consisted of 12 bundles of halal meals, water, flour, rice, tinned food &sweets. Air despatchers carefully launched 12177kgs of aid, with all landing safely.
