Great news for South Vancouver! I was proud to join colleagues from Council, Park Board, and School Board to announce plans for a new 25-metre pool at Sunset Community Centre. This is something South Vancouver has deserved for a long time, and it’s a direct response to community members who have passionately advocated for more recreation opportunities in the neighbourhood. Together with the new Sunset Seniors Centre and our historic investments in community facilities, we’re getting Vancouver back to community.

"Disappointing electioneering" is one way to describe a pool South Van has been asking for since 2008. Another way: a community of 100,000 residents — mostly working-class, mostly racialized — being told for the fourth time in 18 years that their pool is someone else's problem.
Council and ABC have no authority to construct a pool within Sunset Park. It is designated as a permanent park and therefore requires Park Board approval. Several other aquatic facilities have been planned ahead of this. Disappointing electioneering. #stayinyourlane #vanpoli

This pool will be a game changer for families South Van! This is just one of the ways we're getting our city back to community: investing in high quality facilities that Vancouverites deserve. #publicsafety #affordability #backtocommunity
ABC Vancouver is delivering a new pool for South Vancouver! The ABC-led Vancouver City Council has identified delivering a 25 metre pool at Sunset Park as a priority for the upcoming capital plan. This is a big win for the community members who have fought for so long to bring an outdoor pool to South Van and builds on the success of the recently-opened Sunset Seniors Centre. This is just one of the many ways that ABC is getting Vancouver back to community. We're also working to make beginner swimming lessons free and are investing $400M to replace five aging community centres to create a better future for families, youth, and seniors. #abcvancouver #backtocommunity #publicsafety #affordability

It’s coming… a pool for Sunset Community Centre was just announced with renderings. South Vancouver deserves it — more swim lessons, more recreation, more community space, and more opportunities for families, kids, and seniors. Let’s go Sunset! The future is looking good.

This is how elected representation helps in getting communities the infrastructure they deserve. Grateful for an administration that has taken time to listen to our concerns and deliver real results, not just lip service. @Vote4ABC

Fact: The Marpole Community Centre is still on track to get a new pool as part of this upcoming capital plan. Just as Sunset Community Centre will receive one too. This is part of @KenSimCity's push for new pools and free beginner swimming lessons for children and new swimmers.

It was great connecting with former MLA Rob Nijjar, who is once again getting involved in helping move Vancouver forward. Over the last few years, ABC Vancouver has stayed focused on the basics that matter most to residents: • Public safety • Affordability • Respecting your tax dollars • Investing in core services We’ve made real progress. From clearing encampments and expanding police infrastructure, to fighting for safer neighbourhoods, delivering a property tax freeze, and making significant investments in roads, sidewalks, and community centres. There’s still a lot more work to do, but the momentum and passion around ABC Vancouver is strong. We’re going to keep working every day to make this city safer and more affordable. #abcvancouver #publicsafety #affordablitily

This month at City Hall, Vancouver officially proclaimed May 23 as Guru Nanak Jahaz (Komagata Maru) Remembrance Day. This proclamation recognizes the injustices faced by the passengers aboard the Komagata Maru and honours the resilience and contributions of Vancouver’s Sikh community across generations. Thank you to the Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society and all those who continue the important work of remembrance, education, and reconciliation. We remember this history so it is never repeated.

♻️ Recycling just got a whole lot easier in Vancouver. Councillor @LisaDominato and I were pleased to demonstrate one of the new standalone Return-It Express & GO depots now popping up in neighbourhoods across the city. These convenient drop-off centres — made possible through changes we championed at City Hall — help residents recycle quickly using the mobile app. 📱 Located at W 16th & Arbutus and at No Frills on E Hastings by Clark Drive. Give them a try! 🌎💚 @Return_It #Vancouver #Recycling #ReturnIt #Sustainability

The new Sunset Seniors' Centre is officially open. A beautiful $16.1M space for South Vancouver residents to gather, connect, and stay active. Decades in the making, finally delivered. We're getting back to basics. Up next: 🏊 New pool at Sunset Park 🏛️ Rebuilt Kensington Community Centre 🛣️ Upgraded roads, sidewalks and parks Your ABC Vancouver team is focused on the services and infrastructure that matter most to you.
Today, it was my honour to be present for the opening of the new seniors centre at the Sunset Community Centre. This beautiful new facility will be a place for community members to gather and connect, helping elderly residents stay active and engaged in a space designed around their priorities. The Sunset Seniors' Centre is a long time coming for residents of South Vancouver and would not have been possible were it not for the tireless efforts of community members. We're getting back to basics and back to community, and we're proud to be addressing many of the longstanding community investment inequalities that have impacted South Vancouver. That's why, in addition to this facility, we've approved funding towards the construction of a new pool at Sunset, a complete rebuild of Kensington Community Centre, and upgrades to neighbourhood roads, sidewalks, and parks.

Three years ago, a mother called me asking for help for her son. She was a single parent working multiple jobs, doing everything she could to keep him on the right path. She knew the influences around him were dangerous, and she didn’t want to lose her child to the streets. I took him under my wing, and over time he became part of our KidsPlay family. He started showing up regularly, helping with programs, playing soccer with the younger kids, and building connections. I’ll always remember one summer camp when he picked up a little girl, put her on his shoulders, and ran around laughing with her. In that moment, you saw the innocence still inside him. He tutored that same little girl for a local spelling bee. She did well. The first person she hugged after the competition was him. The kids adored him. He was standing at a crossroads, searching for identity, acceptance, and a place to belong. We tried to give him that. But the streets were offering him something too — false promises wrapped in money, status, and belonging. In the end, he made a choice. And now he’s gone. He was one of the two killed in the double homicide on Mother’s Day in Surrey. This one hurts deeply. Not because we didn’t try. We did. Our entire team treated him like family and gave him everything we could. But sometimes love, mentorship, and support are still fighting against forces far bigger than one organization or one person. Behind every headline is someone’s child. Someone who laughed, who carried pain, who still had good in them. Someone whose mother once stayed awake at night praying they would make it home safe. Today, my heart is with every mother grieving a child lost too soon. We have to keep fighting for our youth before the streets claim them first. My deepest condolences to both families. Rest in Peace. @KidsPlayFounda1 #gangs #homicide #restinpeace

Great day for Seniors in South Van. Shout out to @HarjitSajjan for advocating for the funds from the feds.
Today’s ribbon cutting marks the opening of 10,000 sq. ft. of new space at the Sunset Community Centre. Thanks to over $10M in federal support, our seniors can now enjoy two new multipurpose rooms for large events, a commercial kitchen, a fitness room, and so much more.

This is what “back to basics” looks like. We’re making the largest investment in community centres in Vancouver’s history — rebuilding five key facilities and investing in the spaces people rely on every day. Proud to be part of a team delivering real results. Check out the video 👇

Caring about an area of the city that has traditionally been ignored? Standing up for marginalized voices is "ward" politics? Not enough brown and yellow people died to deserve funding? Say what you actually want to say Tom. Racialized folks don't deserve a voice.
Ward politician doing his best to survive in an at-large system. And PS - most heat dome deaths were along Kingsway - a long way from Sunset.

We’re making the largest investment in community centres in the City’s history. Council has dedicated $400 million over the next four years to rebuild five of Vancouver’s aging community centres: Dunbar, Hastings, Kensington, Kerrisdale, and Roundhouse. Why these five? We wanted to deliver the greatest possible benefit within a four year window. That meant prioritizing facilities in need of replacement or significant renovation that were exclusively controlled by the City of Vancouver. By selecting these sites, we’ll be able to get started quickly, and deliver better community centres sooner.
