I haven’t been very active here for the last year or two, other than retweeting covid science. But I’m moving to Bluesky at bsky.app/profile/communikate…. Hope to see lots of you there

We're on the precipice of very serious Measles outbreaks in Canada, now that vaccination rates have stupidly dropped. Improved ventilation in schools ---that we SHOULD HAVE IMPLEMENTED in 2020-- would really help to prevent that now.

Thank you, New York Times. But I think 'alarmists' might be the wrong word then?

The bizarre thing is that, at some point yesterday, they changed this headline from the one on the left to the one on the right. So someone made an intentional decision to change to using the word ‘Covid Alarmist’ AFTER it had been published.

Many jobs require masks: -Scientists -Miners -Firefighters -Construction workers -Crime scene investigators -Asbestos removal It’s not optional. That’s compulsory health & safety law. So why are medical staff exempt from this? Especially in times of soaring infectious disease?

Brilliant interview, well-worth the read. I learned a lot from it

This interview with Dr. Arijit Chakravarty is absolute GOLD. “I think that if you’re out there taking COVID seriously, and if you’re out there still trying to avoid repeated infections, you’re still doing the right thing.” wsws.org/en/articles/2024/12…

It's brutal how often I hear, in the hospital, "COVID is here to stay" from leadership as an excuse not to do anything better about it. People don't say "STIs are here to stay" "cancer is here to stay" "heart disease is here to stay" "concussions are here to stay" etc.

If you’re still masking & taking Covid precautions - thank you. If you stopped - it’s not too late to start again. There are people who will help you. You won’t be alone. If you’re covid cautious & dealing with an infection - it’s not your fault. The system is failing us.

Why aren’t air filters in every hospital, school and care home? Any costs would be cancelled out in weeks via fewer hospital-acquired infections, fewer long-term health issues, fewer healthcare workers off sick, fewer teachers off sick and less lost education. #CleanAir
When a team of doctors, scientists and engineers at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the University of Cambridge placed an air filtration machine in COVID-19 wards, they found that it removed almost all traces of airborne SARS-CoV-2. airspothealth.myshopify.com/…

Today I had an opportunity to address the CDC HICPAC committee The amazing speakers before me covered many topics but generally pushed the committee to do more to protect patients & HCWs, esp wrt protection from airborne transmission 👏👏👏 This was my 3 minute pitch:

This is going to be a messy complicated thread... ...but there are several massive hurdles in the paths of most people that prevent them accepting that Covid infections are responsible for the rising flood of ill health including things like heart attacks and mental illness.

For those wondering why our COVID Forecast score is so high for months on end. It predicts % excess mortality, based on excess mortality estimates from Statistics Canada. If you doubt @StatCan_eng excess mortality estimates, here are the estimates for Canada, the UK and United States from @OurWorldInData . Since the start of Omicron excess mortality in Canada has fluctuated between 10 and 35%. That's higher than StatsCan. We're doing considerably worse than the UK and US, and have been for quite a while. But we don't talk about it publicly.
