From my article in "Free Inquiry" magazine.
“We live in a world that increasingly wants people to ask not, ‘What is true?’ but ‘What should I believe?’” @peterdfisher in @FreeInquiry on why creationism endures and what it reveals about the psychology of belief: secularhumanism.org/2025/09/…

Falling in love is what our species does, unlike the great apes: chimps, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans, but like the "lesser" apes: gibbons and siamangs, and like other primates like titi monkeys.
“Romantic love is not an invention of Western culture. Instead, the idea that romantic love is an invention of Western culture is itself an invention of Western culture, and a rather implausible one at that.” [Link below.]

There is a danger that we underplay the role of natural processes in the evolution of advanced sentient systems. Evolution "designed" brains to maximise survival and reproduction and may have used analogue processes, we don't yet understand, that are not digitally replicable.
I'm a "centrist" about AI sentience. I take two risks seriously: the risk of creating a new kind of sentient being, and the risk of millions of users misattributing sentience to chatbots on the basis of mimicry/role-playing. LSE invited me to explain: youtube.com/watch?v=hg8v_bIM…

Putin is making it very clear that any truce in Ukraine will come only when he is defeated. We talk, he kills Ukrainians. We talk some more, he kills more Ukrainians. He has openly said he wants to destroy Ukraine and that is his war aim. A combined Ukrainian-US-European effort will be needed to defeat him badly enough that he wants a crease fire. Until then he will keep lying and killing. We don’t need a single American military person fighting in Ukraine. We do need to provide advanced weapons in quantity, permission to hit against military targets in Russia and vastly expanded sanctions against Russia. Only then will a ceasefire be possible.

My only comment would be when will we get to the 'new normal'? Even if the world hit net zero tomorrow, there will still be millions of tonnes of legacy carbon in the atmosphere.

It's just been suggesting, on the BBC, that we might need to get used to these new high temperatures. Unfortunately, it's not THIS heat we need to get used to because, according to the science, it's going to get a lot worse.

Here is how science works. First, we guess at the nature of reality. "Then we compute the consequences of the guess to see what would be implied if this law that we guessed is right. Then we compare the result of the computation to nature, with experiment or experience, compare it directly with observation, to see if it works. It it disagrees with experiment, it is wrong" Richard Feynman.

“I can't see ANY of this happening if more women were leaders... Take the Massive Ordnance Penetrator - which sounds more like a sex toy than a bomb - for example.” @maitlis criticises male-dominated leadership for stoking fears of WWIII through reckless global brinkmanship.

90% of Americans -- Ds and Rs alike -- agree it's wrong to treat animals this way. State ballot measures to ban this cruelty have won easily, from CA to FL. Now pork industry lobbyists are pushing Congress to wipe out these state bans in the Farm Bill. They must be stopped.
Mother pigs trapped in cages, unable to turn around. This is what the meat industry wants to bring back. Our footage—featured on @CBSNews (Bay Area— @KPIXtv)—shows why we must protect #Prop12 Thank you @AnneMakovec for covering!

What have we done? A whale-watching company in Ireland has closed down permanently because huge trawlers have left nothing but "an empty, lifeless sea". All the dolphins and humpback, minke & fin whales have disappeared, leaving nothing left to watch. Source in 🧵
