So let’s get this straight—Ukraine, a not-too-wealthy country in Eastern Europe, has been fighting a total war for three years against a full-scale invasion by Russia—one of the largest armies in history, with one of the biggest military budgets, vast economic and human resources, and endless Soviet stockpiles. Despite receiving only limited, carefully rationed, and delayed aid from the West, Ukraine has inflicted a series of heavy defeats on Russia. It has forced Russia to spend months and years fighting for small provincial towns in the Donbas, destroyed 4,000 Russian tanks and around 8,000 IFVs/APCs, and exhausted even Russia’s once-bottomless Soviet reserves—so much so that Moscow is now buying weapons and ammunition from Iran and North Korea. Western systems like the Patriot have outperformed all expectations, delivering the best results in their operational history. Ukrainian drones have effectively neutralized the Russian Black Sea Fleet, while almost every night, Ukrainian strikes wipe out Russian oil depots and military factories. And after three years of total war, Russia—having failed to capture a single regional center or achieve a single one of its objectives—is now coming to the negotiation table. Yet somehow, there are still people claiming that Ukraine’s use of Western weapons is “ineffective” because its infantry sometimes fires NLAWs like RPGs. Seriously—you couldn’t make this up if you tried.

WHO statement on reported clusters of respiratory illness in children in northern China WHO has made an official request to #China for detailed information on an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children. At a press conference on 13 November 2023, Chinese authorities from the National Health Commission reported an increase in incidence of respiratory diseases in China. Chinese authorities attributed this increase to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection which typically affects younger children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Authorities stressed the need for enhanced disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and community settings, as well as strengthening the capacity of the health system to manage patients. On 21 November, media and ProMED reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. It is unclear if these are associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities, or separate events. On 22 November, WHO requested additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results from these reported clusters among children, through the International Health Regulations mechanism. We have also requested further information about recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV and mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the current burden on health care systems. WHO is also in contact with clinicians and scientists through our existing technical partnerships and networks in China. Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illness compared to the same period in the previous three years. China has systems in place to capture information on trends in influenza, influenza-like illnesses, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, and reports to platforms such as the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System. While WHO seeks this additional information, we recommend that people in China follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, which include recommended vaccination; keeping distance from people who are ill; staying home when ill; getting tested and medical care as needed; wearing masks as appropriate; ensuring good ventilation; and regular hand-washing. WHO will continue to provide updates.

Honestly the best part of ChatGPT is finally showing the world that take home tests are dumb and shouldn't be used (and so is live coding during interviews for that matter but that's a topic for another day)

Here's why I believe Ukraine was, and remains, such a threat to Vladimir #Putin: In 1989, Putin was a KGB officer in Dresden when the Berlin Wall fell and communism collapsed. How did that collapse happen? East Germans who were (illegally) watching West German TV saw that their neighbors to the West had a life, and lifestyle, far superior to the one in East Germany. More freedom. More income. More opportunities. Better quality of life. So, East Germans voted with their feet and fled. Putin soon experienced the collapse of East German firsthand. Today, Putin's worst nightmare is a #Ukraine that holds free and fair elections, and has a free media, human rights, freedom of speech and religion. Ukraine, Russia's neighbor, already has a higher standard of living than Russia. Ukraine has not yet reached its potential, but unlike #Russia, they've already made some significant strides in that direction. (Compare the respective trajectories of North and South Korea since 1970 if you want to see a historical precedent.) A successful #Ukraine is simply a ticking time bomb for an autocratic revanchist Tsar in the Kremlin, plain and simple. So yes, you could say that Ukraine was an existential threat to Putin's kleptocratic regime. But not for the absurd reasons the #Kremlin has claimed.
