So many people who talk about the male gaze have never read two of the most seminal works on the matter: Berger's Ways of Seeing, and Laura Mulvey's "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema"
I miss when "male gaze" was about the camera and the assumptions of spectating as opposed to becoming preoccupied with what Bryce, 23, thinks about a woman wearing one dress versus another

This weekends column on a Mayo word, a Mayo writer, and the limits of symbolic solidarity. "The question is not whether individual Israelis should be able to read Sally Rooney. It is whether any cultural transaction that gives oxygen to the appearance of normality is morally defensible while the state continues to annihilate Palestinian life."
β€œIsrael is not a normal country having complicated conversations. It is a state committing war crimes in full public view, protected by American power, European cowardice, and a global architecture of euphemism” ~Colin Sheridan Irish Examiner β˜•οΈπŸ₯

At a conference in Ireland in support of the Palestinian-led BDS movement, author Sally Rooney spoke out against the complicity of the EU and the Irish government in Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza β€” and urged people of conscience to take strategic, moral and collective action.

Really loved this piece's candid take on class divisions among writers and, more specifically, how they shape one's literary legitimacy. There is the survival work of the working class, and the inherited capital that finances the lives of the upper class. thebaffler.com/odds-and-ends…

Incredible. Iran launches a missile in remembrance and in honor of Aaron Bushnell. Yesterday they did the same in revenge for Rachel Corrie. Iran is the only government to honor these American heroes, whose deaths have been ignored by US political and media Epstein class.

There are many reasons to resist AI (e.g. environmental harm, the power it gives to states/corporations, intellectual theft), but perhaps the biggest one for me is that, despite it all, I still believe that the human intellect is miraculous, irreplicable, & worth fighting for.

maybe i am delirious after 30 days of fasting, but i am sitting in my room sobbing about how the land gives back to the people who love it and nurture it, how it reassures them of their oneness, how it cradles them after years of suffering with them. I AM SOBBING AT THIS.
In Gaza, Palestinians visiting the graves of their loved ones were met with an unexpected sight as parts of the cemetery had bloomed with flowers. The scene, shared in videos and images online, showed graves surrounded by fresh blossoms.
