After learning about TX sending school tax $$ to Colorado, based on an investigative report from Spectrum News 1 Texas, I wrote a letter asking the Texas House Investigating Committee to open an investigation. Texas public school tax dollars have been going to the charter school network "Third Future Schools." This network has ties to Mike Miles, the Houston ISD Superintendent, who defends the practice of sending Texas taxes to Colorado. This is unconscionable, and should not be allowed. Our schools are strapped for money, can't pay teachers competitive salaries, and are struggling to do a great job for our kids. My colleagues and I agree we need to have the Legislature investigate the money that has been transferred out of state through the Third Future School network and any other charter networks that could be doing the same thing. We also need to create a law to keep Texas public school tax dollars here. #txlege

Maybe add in a restorer too who could help save some books if they’ve fallen in to disrepair

I am once again asking for a TV show where a librarian and a carpenter travel around helping people manage their book collections - discuss their favorites, their histories, their value, then build amazing shelves and book nooks and libraries in their homes to organize them

The Atlantic has a particularly thorough and damning story about the self-inflicted catastrophe at a poor state's flagship university. I think it's the last one I'll read. They make me too sad. (h/t @ameliaknisely) theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

ā€œI met this man, and then kept meeting him for some reason. I didn’t like the words he said. And after he retired he kept on saying words! (Like… why?) Anyway, I’m sure other people are sad he’s dead. I acknowledge that. āœŒļøā€
Biden's statement on Kissinger is like, I met him, he shared ideas, we really disagreed on things, he shared his ideas some more, condolences to his family.

OpenAI says the board will have women but they just can’t find them! It’s so hard because the natural makeup of a board is all white men, and it is especially important to include the men who had to step down from previous positions for their statements about women’s aptitude.
One of the biggest tasks ahead for OpenAI is building a new board - one that includes women: The names of several women were floated including @laurenepowell and @marissamayer but deemed too close to @sama. @CondoleezzaRice also considered but dismissed. We’re told the new board *will* include women but that’s just step one — roundup by @tsgiles @shiringhaffary @ashleevance bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Listen, I have also recommended @freyamarske’s books to people without checking their comfort levels with smoking hot queer sex scenes first. It’s a known hazard with this series.

Could it be that there’s a ubiquitous form of violence that is overwhelmingly committed against women and girls, the healing from which is inhibited by stigma, victim blaming, and widespread social indifference to or support for perpetrators? No; it’s that women have bad brains.
PTSD is twice as prevalent in women as in men and researchers are not sure why. Recent studies have however shed light on how estrogen and hormonal cycles can influence PTSD. This article explores the connection between PTSD and the menopausal transition. buff.ly/3nxBasU

And link to the effort today by Long Covid patients to call their reps to ask for sustained funding. Despite seeming activity, there is very little. Without proper research, the patients are left to suffer—and are preyed upon by quacks and opportunists. longcovidmoonshot.com/

Significant new analysis of Long Covid impact in the @UpshotNYT. About a million people are *NEWLY* reporting cognitive difficulties, and it's driven by ages 18-49. No other explanation besides pandemic impact makes sense — I was also looking at the same data. Details below.🧵

The Observer identified 20 PACs formed since late 2020 that, through early September, collectively spent more than $1.5 million to support the campaigns of 105 conservative candidates in 35 districts. 65 of these candidates—or 62 percent— won their elections from 2021 to 2023.
