Three months later, this is my last @washingtonpost story — delayed because nearly everyone involved in it was laid off. I am very grateful to newsroom friends who made sure it published anyway, and to brave Roman Mongold and his family for their time. wapo.st/4cNY7Cm

Since the US bombed a school in Minab, killing over 170, children have been identified using parents' DNA, and returned to them for burial. Heartbreaking story by @stephglinski, Mohammad Mohsenifar. foreignpolicy.com/2026/04/03…

The happiness is literally eternal. Gaza's streets are erupting. The tears of everyone, the joy. I lost the words.

Hi European populist politicians, you want to push Syrian refugees back to these homes while foreign powers are still bombing and no one knows how and who will be governing the various regions of the country? It would be cruel and reckless. Those who can will voluntarily return.

Thousands ascended the hill to Sednaya Prison yesterday in search of loved ones taken by the Assad regime. They poured over prison records and pulled apart the concrete of “Assad’s slaughterhouse” looking for a second prison underground, but in vain. thetimes.com/world/middle-ea…

This.
I can't stand it when people say "the first Western journalist to report from". Who cares? What is it supposed to mean? That their reporting will be somehow better than the local journalists already there? Puts me in mind of colonisers "discovering" other people's countries.

Having covered the toppling of Saddam, Gaddafi & Taliban regime & witnessed the jubilation followed by chaos and bloodshed, I really hope Syria will be different. And as one Syrian Kurdish friend said to me ‘today is a time for celebration - tomorrow we can worry…’

This is Sham, 5. Sham is the #Syrian's word for 'Damascus', so the little girl was named after her capital. "She's never been," her father told me. "I've been in Turkey for 10 years, but now I can finally take my family to #Syria. Sham can see Sham."

Exactly what I've been thinking for days...bits of the last days remind me of the Taliban sweeping through Afghanistan, seizing one province after the next, the army falling away...
Syrian army seems to be doing an Afghanistan, falling away as rebels advance - now closing in on Damascus, surely the end of 54 years of Assads in sight?
