Stem cell biologist @MSKCancerCenter studying human PSCs for modeling development & disease and for cell therapy. Opinions are my own and do not represent MSK.
Dr. @TabarViviane and Dr. @studerl, physician-scientists at MSK, have developed a treatment for #Parkinson’s disease that involves creating nerve cells from embryonic stem cells and transplanting them into patients. Early results show the treatment is safe and may improve Parkinson’s symptoms.
"This is an important milestone on the road towards regenerative brain repair," says Dr. Tabar. "It represents more than two decades of collaborative work, based on very rigorous science beginning in our labs."

Congrats to @ZeltnerLab on their new paper. Genipin rescues developmental and degenerative defects in familial dysautonomia models and accelerates axon regeneration | Science Translational Medicine science.org/doi/10.1126/scit…. It was exciting to see this story develop from way back.
👏 Congratulations to Dr. Deb Schrag, Chair of the @MSK_DeptOfMed, and Dr. @studerl, Director of the Center for Stem Cell Biology at MSK, who were elected to the @theNAMedicine, one of the highest honors bestowed upon scientists worldwide.

1) Just out @Nature today! We show that human TMEFF1 is a restriction factor for #Herpes simplex virus 1(HSV1) in the brain, by limiting NECTIN1—HSV1-gD mediated HSV1 entry into cortical neurons. TMEFF1 defect can underlie HSV1 #encephalitis. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
Excellent thread from @ShenYingZhang1 on this new collaborative story, and for our lab one of the first studies to test run new hindbrain neuron protocol developed by @harschnitz
(1) We are happy to share our new study, “SARS-CoV-2 brainstem encephalitis in human inherited DBR1 deficiency” @JExpMed! doi.org/10.1084/jem.20231725. Accumulation of RNA lariats results in impaired antiviral immunity in hPSC-derived hindbrain neurons, underlying encephalitis. x.com/ShenYingZhang1/status/…
Super excited to see this study finally published after many years of work. Congrats to @NatSaurat for the heroic effort and to all the many amazing collaborators who made this work possible. Also big thanks to our funders particularly the JPB foundation, NIA and @ASAP_Research.
How to trigger age-related features in hPSC neurons? In a CRISPR screen @NatSaurat identified neddylation inhibition as a tool to trigger hallmarks of aging in neurons and selective degeneration in AD or PD but not isogenic control neurons. @cellstemcellbit.ly/3XBxCsA

Excited to share that my doctoral thesis work is out in @CellCellPress
We investigated a molecular driver to trigger hPSC-derived midbrain dopamine neurons during engraftment in mice.

Transient TNF-α inhibition overcomes a p53-dependent survival restriction in grafted dopamine neurons as a clinically relevant strategy to promote functional dopamine neuronal engraftment in Parkinson’s disease cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092…
Excited to share our latest paper led by @rachelaglenn. We generated a genetically diverse mouse pluripotent stem cell panel from the Diversity Outbred stock and outline experimental approaches for "population-scale" in vitro directed differentiation.

Why do most dopamine neurons die shortly after transplantation and how can we fix it? Excited to see our story out at Cell. Congrats to @TaeWanKim0 & SoYeon Koo @MSKCancerCenter and to all the other collaborators who made this work possible. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…
Excellent to hear that the FDA gave RMAT designation to DA-01 (Bemdaneprocel) following the promising 18-month data in 12 patients from the BlueRock-sponsored dopamine neuron cell therapy trial in advanced PD – see also article below and BR press release bit.ly/4c4QsMC
