Case in point: there's no way to build a backdoor that only the "good guys" can use. When the entire technical community says that the EU's ChatControl legislation similar pose serious cybersecurity threats, we're not exaggerating for effect.

Reminder that “chat control” is an effort to legislate the installation of mandatory scanning for all private conversations across the EU, including end-to-end encrypted conversations. This tech isn’t ready, isn’t safe, and fundamentally isn’t a good idea.

Replying to @VeraJourova
On a panel today, EU Commission VP @VeraJourova admits that proposed CSAM scanning / #ChatControl rule clarifies "that even encrypted messaging can be broken for sake of better protection of children" Previously, EU officials stated no one would be forced to break encryption

I don't understand why this nonsense ever spread so far or why anyone is taking it seriously, but if you need someone to say it's all nonsense, here we go: it's all nonsense. x.com/stillgray/status/17927…

Terrence Howard is on some esoteric stuff when speaking to Joe Rogan about the periodic table of elements and its relationship with sound. Can anyone verify what he's saying?

I have always found it intriguing how "Middle East" translates into Czech as "blízký východ" (=nearby/close East). We're somewhat geographically closer than (let's say) UK, but it does not feel like enough to justify the difference.

The negligence in cases like this one is just remarkable. All it would take is just ONE of the authors/journal editor/reviewer(s)/proof editors actually reading it. But hey, the publishing/citation farms keep churning...

While going through my queue of papers to read, I have (finally) read Sara Hooker's "The Hardware Lottery". For anyone interested in application-specific (AI) computing hardware/architectures, this is definitely worth a read. arxiv.org/abs/2009.06489

A technology quietly maturing over the last 10 years that few people talk about. But it's at the bottleneck of current limitations on GPU performance and compute. A 🧵 on how Silicon Photonics will enable the next computing hardware revolution, starting with interconnect

Echoing this sentiment: archive.is/ZAyLI Regulation ("The Brussels Effect") cannot be the principal EU export if it wants to stay technologically relevant, competitive and independent.

My favourite ChatGPT output so far, this is just perfect. 💯
I asked ChatGPT to rewrite Bohemian Rhapsody to be about the life of a postdoc, and the output was flawless:

In my group, we mainly focus on two types of light-powered devices = semiconductor lasers and optoelectronic circuits. We investigate their neuron-like dynamics as well as information processing capabilities. Let me know if you have any questions! ☺️

The overall scope and informational value of this thread is incredible. Well worth reading.
Many argue that sanctions are "ineffective". That’s false. They are already highly effective in undermining Russian military efforts and can be made even more efficient. They can guarantee that Russia loses this war if they are goal-oriented and not moral crusade-oriented🧵
All Strathy students (and especially PGRs) are more than welcome to join! 🙏🏻
SCOPE Welcome Social is happening in person on the 15th of October at 6pm in the Strath Union! 🥂 We have 3 exciting talks from @gailmcconnell, @thisismatej and @RalfMBauer on the theme of surviving the PhD! Sign up below: eventbrite.co.uk/e/ieee-welc…, spaces are limited for talks!

It's crazy that with an iPhone, a little Starlink antenna, and a solar power unit, you could live in an isolated cave in the mountains (or on a raft in the middle of the Pacific) and get a world-class education, start a business or art career, & make friends all around the world.

Free webinar from an excellent speaker - don't miss out on this one! 🔬:)
Next Wednesday (August 11th) at 10am (BST) we have an exciting talk from Professor Zeev Zalevsky on his work in Breaking the bounds of imaging in label-free nanoscopy, micro-endoscopy and opthamology: Register here to attend: bit.ly/SCOPE_ZalevskyTalk
1/ Couple of days ago, our latest paper "Neuromorphic encoding of image pixel data into rate-coded optical spike trains with a photonic VCSEL-neuron" got published in @AIP_publishing's APL Photonics Journal. aip.scitation.org/doi/full/1… Let's look at what it is all about! :) 1/n

12/ While the reconstructed output exhibits higher degree of noise (we attribute this mainly to the short-term memory effect in the VCSEL), the image is clearly reconstructed - which means all of the pixel information was succesfully encoded into the temporal domain.

13/ This demonstrates a complete RGB image encoded into rate-coded temporal representation with an off-the-shelf VCSEL functioning as a native photonic spiking information encoder. 🎉 @AHurtadoLab @PhysicsStrath #AcademicTwitter #phdchat
