Went to check on the GoPro that I left running on the roof and predictably it had stopped recording at some point.. But caught the main show at least (so far?) Cornwall, UK 19/01/2026 #northernlights #Aurora

'Fox Meadow', 16x12inch, oil. A painting inspired by a family of foxes I see regularly playing and feeding in the field behind my house. I've been lucky to see the adults most evenings gathering food and working the field, soon we may have cubs🦊

What's happening to this Sun-crossing rocket? The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, visible on the upper left, launched only about one minute before this amazing image was captured. As it rose to low Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, in late May, the rocket became supersonic before it crossed the disk of the distant Sun -- from the perspective of the well-placed photographer. The spacecraft's high speed caused bow-shaped compressed-air shockwaves to form across leading surfaces, with at least three visible even outside the Sun's disk because they refract sunlight. The trailing exhaust caused turbulence visible on the lower right. None of this was damaging to the robotic Starlink 10-53 mission, which delivered 29 communications satellites to low Earth orbit as planned. And if that isn't amazing enough - the Sun had spots! Maybe they shouldn't have had Advocaat and Curaçao for the hydration break.

Either my TV or my eyes have an issue with the Netherlands kit colour against the grass. Looks like a 90's video game but only for one team.

The crescent Moon rising above the mountain ridge in the Chilean Andes. I captured this image from Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory as the rising Moon was glowing in the twilight. Such a beautiful view! It reminds me why we keep doing astronomy :)

This morning between 3:20-4:00 @markskaggs10 and I captured noctilucent clouds above Seattle! These clouds are the highest clouds on planet earth. I have been after this composition with them, Mt Baker and the Space Needle for close to a decade now! We finally got it! #wawx

Motion of the nearby red dwarf star Wolf 359 captured over a 7 yr period. Wolf 359 is a small red dwarf star about 7.9 light-years from Earth, making it one of the Sun’s nearest stellar neighbours. It lies in the constellation Leo and is far too dim to see without a telescope. Its proper motion is unusually high: about 4.7 arc seconds per year, meaning its position shifts noticeably against background stars over just a few years.

It may be irrational but it still really annoys me that the BBC can't just say "this one is on ITV". If they can't bring yourself to say it, fine. But then don't bother writing articles like this. Everyone knows if they say "you can listen on BBC sounds" what that means.

‘My wife and I were greatly saddened to learn of the death of David Hockney O.M., a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through and a dear friend and inspiration to so many. David was one of life’s true originals; one who wore his genius as lightly as those beloved yellow Crocs of his that helped brighten Palace occasions. I trust they will see him tread safely into the hereafter as we mourn a man whose irrepressible charm, talent and constant innovation will be most sorely missed, but whose dazzling creativity lives on in galleries and museums around the world.’ Charles R

People saying we need to find extra money to get defence spending to 3% of GDP aren't thinking outside the box. We can just lock defence spending in dollar terms and tank the economy and we get the same result. Not sure why people make things so complicated.

A closer view of the jellyfish red sprite from last night. This was with an 80mm lens to get more detail but of course it ended up at the edge of the field. Hoping for another chance tonight. It looks promising.
