The India–NZ FTA could be delayed until after the General Election allowing NZ First to veto it in coalition party negotiations.
How to delay:
- Extended Select Committee Review: The agreement has been referred to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee for examination. MPs who oppose the deal could seek a wider public consultation process, including public submissions and hearings, which would lengthen the review period.
- Delays to Enabling Legislation: Before the agreement can take effect, Parliament must pass any required legislative changes, such as amendments to tariff laws. These bills can also be delayed.
- Requests for Further Advice: Some parties like NZ First and Act may argue that more time is needed to assess the legal, immigration, or economic implications of the agreement.
