Enrico Fermi: "I'm getting rusty and old—I cannot follow the highbrow theory developed by Oppenheimer's pupils anymore. I went to their seminar and was depressed by my inability to understand them. Only the last sentence cheered me up: 'And this is Fermi's theory of beta decay.'"

I received another disappointing un-fundable score for my @NIH grant today. I am privileged, and I realize no-one wants to hear me complain. Just sharing to make the point that everyone experiences this kind of feedback, and that it never stops from stinging! 1/3

What if I told you there was a single intervention we could deliver in our cities that would cool them during heatwaves, reduce flooding, scrub pollutants from the air, boost biodiversity, improve public health, and even reduce crime? You wouldn't believe me. But it's true.

Impressive how creative some folks can be, even with something as cerebral as the presidential debates. rollingstone.com/music/music… Having Weird A Yankovic as the moderator may be a good way to keep these debates in 'check'. :-)

For those of you that missed the debate yesterday, here is an (only mildly altered) transcription of the debate. waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/debat…

To invent new reasons for a decision every time our leaders need to justify anything is pathetic and unworthy. I may have been unhappy with some decisions, but at least I felt that I knew the rules of the game. Now the kids with the ball change the rules in the middle of the game

In Singapore, if you opt out of the organ-donor scheme you go to the bottom of the list for transplants. Wouldn't that be a good idea for masks: if you opt out of wearing one you go to the bottom of the list for coronavirus treatment?

This paper appears to yield a number of VERY USEFUL hypotheses and treatment for critical patients if true: chemrxiv.org/articles/COVID-… (1/n)

i dont think this paper is getting enough airtime. theorizes how and why coronavirus reduces blood O2 and causes "crushed glass" lung imagery (kicks out heme from RBCs), risk factors (high A1C, blood sugar, hemoglobin), and why certain treatments work chemrxiv.org/articles/COVID-…
