For children to flourish, they need to grow up reading and being read to. The following is a list of essential books for any beloved children in your life. And they’re brilliant enough that they can be enjoyed equally well by adults. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, preferably in a kid-friendly version. These shockingly strange stories of magic and adventure fired the minds of authors like Lovecraft, Dickens, George Eliot and the BrontĆ« sisters. FIVE CHILDREN AND IT and THE PHOENIX AND THE CARPET, by Edith Nesbit. A series of books about four children who have misadventures with a Psammead and a phoenix. The way Edith portrays kids was a major influence on Narnia and Harry Potter. A WRINKLE IN TIME, by Madeleine L’Engle. Awkward, brainy Meg Murry must travel to the ends of the universe to rescue her father, in a visionary fusion of science, mysticism and cosmic horror leavened by L’Engle’s gentle Episcopalianism. LITTLE WOMEN, by Louisa May Alcott. Not just for girls. Alcott is second to none as a writer of characters, and in telling the story of the March sisters and Laurie, she becomes the closest thing we have to an American Dickens. ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. Harold Bloom called them the greatest children’s fantasies ever written, and they are my personal favorites. Every child needs to know the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN, by George MacDonald. A girl named Irene must battle a race of sinister goblins with soft feet who are threatening to abduct her and force her into marriage. The influence of MacDonald’s Goblins can be seen in The Hobbit. THE WESTING GAME, by Ellen Raskin. A child’s first introduction to the mystery genre. Turtle Wexler is one of the all-time great children’s book heroines, and reading the end of this book as an adult still brings me to tears. A JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH and TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, by Jules Verne. Some of the most thrilling adventure stories ever written, satisfying a child’s fascination with things that live in the sea or beneath the earth. A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, by Lemony Snicket. A masterpiece of contemporary fantasy, Snicket’s unique blend of whimsy, Gothic horror and clever wordplay birthed a generation of darkly funny, verbally precocious readers. Read to your kids. Teach them that reading is for pleasure, not to pass a test. Let them read what they love. Let them see you reading books with joy and enthusiasm. That’s how you get a child to fall in love with reading. That’s how you make a lifelong reader.

PRO-LIFE IS WHITE SUPREMACY?šŸ¤” Here's @realBrandonGill pressing SPLC interim CEO Bryan Fair on whether pro-lifers are white supremacist. To be clear: SPLC does not put pro-life groups on the "hate map," not yet. But the SPLC has tied pro-life activism to white supremacy. 🧵1/8

America at 250 On June 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress takes a pivotal step toward American independence by appointing the Committee of Five to draft the Declaration of Independence. Chosen for the task: • Thomas Jefferson (Virginia) • John Adams (Massachusetts) • Benjamin Franklin (Pennsylvania) • Roger Sherman (Connecticut) • Robert R. Livingston (New York) Jefferson, praised for his eloquent pen, was urged by Adams to take the lead on the first draft. After revisions by Adams and Franklin, the committee presented its work to Congress on June 28, history was just days away…

"There’s more movement to be had. 1792 Exchange has identified over 200 major companies that likely use the SPLC’s ā€œhate listā€ to vet charitable recipients. Charitable providers like Benevity, which process billions in employee donations annually, use SPLC data to screen nonprofit recipients. As more and more companies back away from the SPLC, now is the moment for providers like Benevity to demonstrate leadership in forwarding the goal of political neutrality for its corporate clients. Using a ā€œhate mapā€ that treats TPUSA and the Klan as morally equivalent doesn’t do that."
ā€¼ļøICYMI, my latest @realDailyWire on how corporate America can ditch the SPLC. "The SPLC’s hate list helped inject lies about faith & right-of-center politics into corporate America. This lie damaged America’s social fabric and created genuine danger for real people." ā¬

An Open Letter to Benevity: Stop Using the SPLC's Discredited "Hate List" Charitable giving platforms like Benevity are supposed to empower generosity among Americans, not attempt to enforce radical ideology. As an organization placed on the SPLC's "Hate List," Turning Point USA is calling on Benevity to adopt a fair and viewpoint-neutral standard.

A platform trusted by 200 Fortune 1000 companies has no business using the SPLC’s hate list to discriminate against mainstream conservative organizations. Thank you for standing with us on this, @TPUSA.

America at 250 On this day in 1775, John Adams proposed turning those New England militiamen besieging Boston into a unified Continental Army and suggested a Virginian named George Washington to lead it. Adams knew that for the fight against Britain to succeed, the colonies had to look (and fight) like one nation. A few days later, Washington accepted command, and the Continental Congress made it official.
