Excellent news from the Council on the next MFF. A provisional agreement has been found for the Council position on key building blocks for the EU budget. I just congratulated President @Christodulides for his leadership and the hard work of @CY2026EU There is still work to do but the direction is clear. Member States support the Commission’s ambition for a simpler and modern EU budget. One that invests in Europe’s priorities such as competitiveness, security, agriculture, cohesion and its global role.

Today, the European Union took a major step forward. All member states agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. At the first intergovernmental conference on Monday, we will open the cluster on fundamentals; the backbone of the accession process. It covers the core values and principles on which the EU is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions. This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges. And a signal that the EU’s offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatchable. Enlargement is a strategic choice. By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent. In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest. Enlargement remains one of the EU’s greatest success stories and our best investment in our shared future.

It is a pleasure to be in Paris today for talks with @jnbarrot. We spoke about the state of talks to end the Iran war and further strengthening our common EU foreign policy decision-making. Together, we are working to build a stronger and more united Europe - one that acts with purpose, upholds its values, and defends our shared European interests. Later today, I will also address the Two-State Solution Conference hosted by France in support of the Palestinian and Israeli civil societies committed to peace.

Ireland’s own EU story shows what Europe can do for peace when it brings countries closer together. Great meeting with Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD in Dublin. At a time when EU accession negotiations with our frontrunners are accelerating, I welcome Ireland’s strong support for EU enlargement. With the Irish Presidency ahead, we will work together to help our candidates move forward with reforms and take the next steps on their EU path in order to make Europe stronger.

That is why we are filling our Security and Defence Partnership with life. For instance, by starting work on a Security of Information Agreement to enable the secure exchange of classified information.
