Excellent new work from colleagues @NoraAndFauna and @WolfnerLab showing how an odorant binding protein might have become co-opted for a reproductive function in Drosophila. It's now required for mating plug formation and thus fertility! elifesciences.org/articles/8…

It is incredibly sad news to hear about the passing of Michael Ashburner. He was an incredible scientist, propelling both Drosophila genetics and genomics. A true leader that will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
