In the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, @UNESCO condemns the reported strike on 15 June that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, within the World Heritage property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”, one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks. The strike reportedly caused significant damage to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral. Adjacent historic structures, including elements of the Lavra’s fortification complex and Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly impacted. #UNESCO condemns attacks against cultural property, educational institutions, students, education personnel and media professionals protected under international law. Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion. Although I’m currently bedridden and unwell, I could not ignore the news that Russia struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most sacred Christian sites and most important religious and cultural landmarks. Founded in 1051, the monastery complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest Christian monasteries in Eastern Europe. For nearly a thousand years, it has served as a major spiritual center and is home to historic churches, cathedrals, and the famous underground cave monastery that gave the Lavra its name. Despite my illness and exhaustion, I cannot look away from what I see as a horrific crime. Russia has also destroyed churches in Syria and left devastation to both people and heritage. According to local authorities, 4 people were killed and 20 others were injured. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
