This would honestly be incredibly useful.
Proposal: PhD-level course in "how to get stuff to build and run". The final exam assigns you a random GitHub repo for a paper from no less than five years ago and asks you to get it running within 24 hours

Following this budget, our tax system is even more intergenerationally unfair than before: A 27 year old graduate earning £30k pays a 40% marginal tax rate. A 47 year old earning £30k has a 31% marginal rate. A 67 year old on £30k pays just a 19% marginal rate of tax.

Oh good, @georgeeaton has crunched the numbers and the answer is yes x.com/georgeeaton/status/157…

A graduate earning £50k will pay a *higher* marginal rate (51%) than someone on £150K (42%) A graduate earning £25k will pay a 40% marginal rate, just 2 points less than top earners.

Does this now mean that a post-2009 graduate on £50k a year will pay a higher marginal tax rate (including student loan repayments) than someone on £200k who went to university for free before tuition fees were introduced?

A lot of blog posts on research vision, less so on the day to day of managing your research, experiments, and productivity. I’ve repeated this to students enough times so I’ve written it up tinyurl.com/Research-product…

Great thread on what I think is emerging as a big issue: if big AI is trained on data I produced (text, images, code), should I get credit for what it then produces?

Fundamental stats error here from the DfT 🤦‍♂️ the average of a set of median values is not a median of anything!

Though to be fair, the DfT did correct this statement with a true median across all 4 groups which is almost the same as the £44k quoted
