More #Ebola cases are being detected as response is scaled up. An increase in cases does not necessarily mean that the response is failing. It reflects the oucome of intensified efforts that are helping to uncover the true scale of the outbreak.

Honoured to welcome a high-level delegation from @TheElders, including Ernesto Zedillo, @MaEllenSirleaf, @elbegdorj, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and @DenisMukwege, to the @WHO Regional Emergency Warehouse in Nairobi, Kenya, to see our emergency response operations and capacity firsthand. At a time of growing humanitarian and public health challenges, their visit is a strong affirmation of global solidarity and the need for sustained investment in emergency systems that protect vulnerable communities across the African Region. We need voices like @TheElders to carry WHO’s vision into the world, because the only way for all of us to be safe is to strengthen health systems everywhere.

Proud of Dr @FreddyBanza5, @WHO staff deployed from #Dakar to support #hantavirus response aboard MV Hondius, and all colleagues who have worked and continue to work tirelessly on this public health event. The @WHOAFRO Emergency Hubs in Dakar and Nairobi were established to support rapid public health emergency response. Solidarity is the beating heart of global health security.
I just spoke with Dr @FreddyBanza5, the @WHO staff still on board of MV Hondius, and captain Jan Dobrogowski to get the latest updates. I used the opportunity to express my appreciation @ECDC_EU and the Dutch medical teams on board. Last Tuesday, Freddy was deployed from the @WHOAFRO Emergency Hub on short notice to travel to Praia, Cabo Verde, following the request to conduct detailed epidemiological and environmental investigations before the ship could disembark. He immediately committed to serve on this mission. This is not the first major WHO operation Freddy has actively participated in. Since 2012, he has supported several Ebola responses in the region, served as the deputy regional incident manager for COVID-19, and as the incident manager for cholera in the DRC. #hantavirus

Health priorities are bankable when clearly defined and reform-linked, turning ambition into plans partners can support. At the High-Level Forum on Sustainable Health Financing in Morocco, I discussed the shift we need: treating health as investment. Financing is about credibility, not ambition.

My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in the devastating floods and landslides in Gamo Zone, South #Ethiopia Region. Climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent, increasing health risks. The affected communities in Gamo face heightened risks of malnutrition and diseases such as cholera and malaria. @WHO is deploying first responders to support national rapid response teams, coordinating the health response and delivering emergency medical supplies.

At the #AUSummit, I joined leaders at the High-Level Side Event on Africa’s Health Sovereignty, convened under the #AccraReset initiative. As financing patterns shift and partnerships evolve, reforming the global health architecture is no longer optional. It is a necessity. Aligning behind a global reset of health cooperation means strengthening country ownership, reinforcing primary health care, and improving coherence across institutions to ensure global norms and financing arrangements support national priorities. Sovereignty and solidarity go hand in hand. @WHO is working with Member States and partners to turn these declarations into steady implementation and tangible improvements in people’s lives.

One of the best tools to mobilize domestic funding for health is applying health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks. While taxation reduces the consumption of these harmful products and therefore the disease burden associated with them, it also generates income for the government. Many countries have shown that this is a powerful tool for health: -The Philippines expanded health insurance to more than 15mn families. -Lithuania reduced all-cause mortality rate. -The UK reduced obesity rates among girls aged 10-11. @WHO looks forward to supporting more countries to design and implement health taxes to protect health and to transition away from aid dependency towards sustainable self-reliance WHO 3 by 35 initiative: who.int/initiatives/3-by-35

Good discussion today at the Polio Oversight Board meeting with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners in #NYC ahead of #UNGA80. As we work to #EndPolio, our shared message is clear: invest, innovate & act, because stopping polio is possible.
I joined members of the Polio Oversight Board to discuss the progress made and challenges we still face to rid the world of the polio virus. I was encouraged by the commitment shown by Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners to keep striving to #EndPolio and promote and protect the health of at risk children and their communities. As part of this, we are committed to building on the multi-year investments in polio surveillance and vaccination, and transforming these gains into lasting benefits and capacities that support all areas of health in affected countries. #UNGA80

Unhealthy diets are among the world’s leading killers – leading to an estimated 8 million deaths a year. Much of this is driven by aggressive marketing of products that harm health. Transforming the world’s food systems requires political commitment, cross-sectoral collaboration, and to hold the private sector accountable for improving how food is grown, processed, marketed and consumed. #UNFSS2025
